Question: My husband had bladder cancer, they removed his entire bladder ? He now has bone cancer.. & is in a lot of pain. what is his life expectancy. radiation & chemotherapy has not been done yet, due to not knowing he had bone cancer.. test kept coming back that everything was ok.. an infection was covering up the cancer.. not sure what happen but he has been in pain for 6-8 months w/no treatment..
Answer: The primary treatment for bone cancer is surgery. However, I think it is more likely your husband’s bladder cancer spread to the bone, rather than his having bone cancer.
Without knowing what type of cancer he has, the stage, grade and how long after diagnosis he had his surgery it is hard to answer your question. However, it is rather unusual to not have chemo following a cystectomy as it usually delays progression for about a year. His life expectancy will really depend on how well he responds to treatment. To give you some idea, if his cancer invaded the muscle or perivesical fat there is about a 50% mortality rate within the first 18 months.
Radiation often relieves pain due to bone mets. I hope this is the case for your husband no one should be in pain for 6-8 months. Have you considered getting a second opinion? Best wishes to you both.
