Bladder Cancer Research
Question: Did you know that dogs can smell cancer on your breath? This canine ability has been lab stested by British / Australian research. With special training, dogs can actually smell cancer. They can be trained to smell bladder cancer in your urine, for example. Search Google for "dog sniffing bladder cancer" if you don't believe me, or go to this site:
http://tinyurl.com/jrucl
Answer: I too have heard about this.I believe that Dolphins are also very 'intuitive' in sensing illness and disease, apparently they keep 'nudging/nosing' the affected area. It's just unfortunate that not all of us will ever get the opportunity or be privileged enough to experience 'swimming' with these amazing creatures.

Question: Does anyone have info on ewings sarcoma of the bladder? i had a ewings sarcoma tumor on my bladder but all my research only says it is a type of bone cancer nothing on ewings tumor connected to the bladder
Answer: Ewings sarcoma can affect both the bone and soft tissue (sometimes called primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the body. It is a rare cancer anyway, and it is very rare to have a Primary ewing's sarcoma of the bladder . . but it is not impossible.
If you go to Entrez PubMed which is part of the National Library of Medicine you can locate information about your specific disease:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed

The bladder is also a unique place for Ewings to metastasize, but, again it is possible as there have been previous reports:

Adrenal metastases are more frequent than primary adrenal carcinoma. The most frequent are, in this order: breast and lung cancer, stomach and kidney carcinomas, adrenal gland contralateral tumors and melanoma. Less frequent are tumours of the bladder, colon, esophagus, gall bladder, liver, pancreas, prostate, stomach and uterus. The rest of the tumours rarely spread toward adrenal glands. The metastases to the adrenal glands caused by sarcomas are rare and normally they happen in the contest of a massive metastases affecting several organs at the same time. We present a case of a patient affected by adrenal metastases of Ewing's sarcoma who has been referred to us for surgical treatment because it is a unique metastases (there is no sing of more illnesses in other organs at the time of the exploration).

My son has a rare, aggressive soft tissue sarcoma that is related to Ewings Sarcoma called desmoplastic small round cell tumor. It predominately strikes boys and young adults and presents as multiple masses within the abdomen. Because it is rare there were few treatment options, so his oncologist used the protocol for Ewings sarcoma . . and it worked. :-)
Question: My Urologist is saying I have Bladder Reflux and I need an Inter-Stim Pacemaker .....? My Urologist is saying I have Bladder Reflux (BR) and I need an Inter-Stim Pacemaker. After doing research I read that BR does not usually show any pain or outward symptoms but yet this Physician is in a hurry to default to this surgery and device. I am a survivor of Infantile Neuroblastoma (Cancer) and have a severely atrophied pelvis as a result of the cancer treatment. Recently I was hospitalized for severe abdominal pain (bladder area) and no urination and the "diagnosis" was Bladder Reflux which I say is BS. My take is it was either the ureter being pinched by intestines/colon in the smaller than normal pelvic area OR a muscle issue with pelvic floor or hip flexor (sp) muscles. ANY help or advice would be welcomed. I am definitely a unique case and I feel the doctors are ignoring my physical anatomy differences due to the cancer and just defaulting to the "easy" way out for them which more than likely isn't the TRUE cause. H E L P, please.
Answer: My advice would be to get a second opinion. You should go to the top urological specialist in your country and bring all x-rays, test results, etc. and see what he/she says.
Question: Wouldn't it be nice to have a dog in every doctor's office to screen for disease? Mon, Jun 22 05:50 PM Dogs are being trained in Britain as potential life-savers to warn diabetic owners when their blood sugar levels fall to dangerously low levels.
Man's best friend already has been shown capable of sniffing out certain cancer cells, and dogs have long been put to work in the hunt for illegal drugs and explosives.
Their new front-line role in diabetes care follows recent evidence suggesting a dog's hyper-sensitive nose can detect tiny changes that occur when a person is about to have a hypoglycemic attack.
A survey last December by researchers at Queen's University Belfast found 65 percent of 212 people with insulin-dependent diabetes reported that when they had a hypoglycemic episode their pets had reacted by whining, barking, licking or some other display.
At the Cancer and Bio-Detection Dogs research centre in Aylesbury, southern England, animal trainers are putting that finding into practice and honing dogs' innate skills. The charity has 17 rescue dogs at various stages of training that will be paired up with diabetic owners, many of them children.
"Dogs have been trained to detect certain odours down to parts per trillion, so we are talking tiny, tiny amounts. Their world is really very different to ours," Chief Executive Claire Guest told Reuters TV.
The centre was started five years ago by orthopaedic surgeon Dr John Hunt, who wanted to investigate curious anecdotes about dogs pestering their owners repeatedly on parts of their body that were later found to be cancerous. At around the same time, the first hard evidence was being gathered by researchers down the road at Amersham Hospital that dogs could identify bladder cancer from chemicals in urine.
The move into diabetes followed the case of Paul Jackson, who told Guest and her team about his dog Tinker who warns him when his sugar levels get too low and he is in danger of collapsing."It's generally licking my face, panting beside me. It depends how far I have gone before he realises," Jackson said. Tinker has now been trained by the Aylesbury centre and is a fully qualified Diabetic Hypo-Alert dog, complete with red jacket to announce himself as a working assistance animal.
The centre is continuing work to perfect dogs' ability in spotting signs of cancer. But while dog-lover Guest says it would be nice to have a dog in every doctor's office to screen for disease, ultimately that is not practical.
Instead, she hopes the research will lead to the invention of an electronic nose that will mimic a dog's.
"At the moment electronic noses are not as advanced as the dogs', they are about 15 years behind. But the work that we are doing and what we are finding out will help scientists advance quickly so that they can use electronic noses to do the same thing," she said.
Edit: Bear! You stay away from dogs today...and stairs! : )
Answer: Strange dogs have a tendency to sniff my crotch,so does that mean I've got ball cancer or something?
NO!
I'll trust the doctor & my own intuition every time.
Faith - Impossible,as you very well know! ;)
Question: water vs. coke would you like a glass of water or coke? active ingredients in coke will dissolve a finger nail in four days! in many states highway patrol carries 2 gallons of coke to remove blood off the road after a car accident put a t bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will dissolve in 2 days! To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes
To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.
Coke will also clean road haze from your windshield.
75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (This likely applies to half the world population.)
In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied (in a University of Washington study).
Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
Preliminary research indicates that 8 to 10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.
Answer: I used to drink lots of coke..then I realized it contributed alot to my weight problem..now I drink as much water as possible. Crystal Light makes powder packets now that you can pour into the bottle for taste. They have no sugar or calories or sodium or anyhing. They give water a pizzaz.
Question: what do u think of this essy so far? THE DANGERS OF SMOKING
Juliana Okereke
Sec:7,8
All smokers must quit now!!! Scientists have discovered that smoking kills more people then Aids, alcohol, car accidents, suicide, and illegal drugs put together.Statistics shows that 22.3% of U.S citizens smoke. Smoking causes many different health risks, coast a lot of money, and is linked to environmental tobacco smoke, which is known has second hand smoking.
Studies have shown that smoking is dangerous to a smoker’s health and that 4,000 chemicals found in cigarettes can cause cancer. In addition, smoking causes 30% of all cancer deaths. In 1982 Surgeon General stated That “Cigarette smoking is a major cause of cancer in the United states”. This is as true today as it was in 1982. Cancer is only half of the health problems caused by smoking. Smoking also causes heart disease, bronchitis, emphysema, and strokes.Addentionly, smoking can cause Osteoporosis, which is a disease that causes older people to become bent over and break there bones easily. Smoking is also said to shorten your life by 14 years.
Not only can smoking harm you, it can also cost you a lot of money. It is estimated that smoking just a pack a day, can cost you $1,800 a year wait there is more, smoking over the course of a life time can cost you $58,400.000 dollars! For example, smoker Barney has to pay $12 per day for one and a half pack of cigarettes that’s $4,380 per year. This is money you could spend on something useful such as helping the poor, buying a new car, or save for some thing special you may want to buy, later in your life.
Furthermore, not only can smoking harm the smoker, it can also harm the people around him or she too. This is known as second hand smoking or environmental tobacco smoke. Statistics says that 3,000 people die of second hand smoking each year. There are 2 types of second hand smoking: mainstream smoke and side stream smoke.Mianstream smoke is when half of the smoke is inhaled or exhaled. Sidesream smoke is when smoke floats in the air. Second hand smoking can cause a lot of health issues such as lung cancer, nasal sinus, cavity cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, and bladder cancer. In addition too, second-hand smoking has a greater risk on children it can worsen their asthma conditions and can cause sudden infant death or (SID).
In conclusion, based on my research on the dangers of smoking, I think all smokers should quit because of its heath risks, heavy expenses on ones income, as well as hazards to the environment. In fact, in 1982 Surgeon General said that former smokers live longer than continuing smokers. For example, people who smoked and quit before the age of 50 have half the risk of dying in the next 15 years compared with continuing smokers. But even though 70% of smokers want to quit and 35% attempt to quit, sadly only 5% succeed in quitting. A famous quote, I think has to do with smoking is “Cigarettes are killers that travel in packs”; This quote tells about the danger of smoking. I think that if anyone ever chooses to smoke he or she is making a very bad decision.
Answer: I thinks its pretty good once you work out a few of the misspelled words
Question: Please tell me this isnt prostate cancer im only barely 19!? Im a healthy just turned 19 year old male. On friday afternoon i started having these weird symptoms. I began urinating frequently, however in very small amounts. I also started having urinary hesitancy. It can take a minute or more for me to get urine flow. My dad has threatened to kick me out of the house (jokingly) because I keep talking about this. He says i have some kind of infection at worst (i sure believe and hope so). Anyways, i wish i could be ok and relax thinking its a urinary tract infection, but ive got no pain or blood in urine. I dont have an STD because im a virgin. Im scared enough to have made an appointment for tomorrow with a urologist. Im hoping its either a bladder infection of some kind or a UTI without pain or blood (dont even know if its possible) I as a hypocondriac researched this for the past 2 days. Im way too young to either have an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer, however i have the hesitancy, urge to go frequently with little urine coming out, and no pain! these are some of the symptoms of prostate cancer and or enlarged prostate. I dont want to lose any more sleep from this, can anyone help me with reasons this cant be prostate cancer and how im just overreacting? Thanks so much!
Answer: Only rarely does a UTI cause bleeding, and you can sometimes have a UTI without pain. There are also many other things, such as stones, that could be the cause of these symptoms that are not cancer. The likelihoo of someone your age having prostate cancer is very slim.
By the way, Rx used in the answer above, means prescribe/treatment, and I agree, you will most likely get antibiotics from the urologist tomorrow.

Question: Chronic UTIs or something more serious? For about a year now I've been getting UTIs all the time. The first one was treated by my doctor and went away for a little while but the UTI feeling would keep coming back right before my period every month and then right after. I went back to the doctor multiple times to get antibiotics and it just wouldn't stop. I eventually got blood tests and ultrasounds with no results. The problem persisted and in October I went to the gynecologist to get on birth control and when they did a routine urine test it showed that I had another UTI. This test was during one of the times that it felt like I had a UTI after my period. I took the antibiotics, and now I've had the UTI feeling for a few weeks as well as abdominal pain, stomachaches and switching between feeling hot and cold. The past few days, I've started passing pieces of tissue...some are mostly pink with a little bit of white and some are dark red. It looks like the lining of my bladder is being passed in relatively big pieces because I can actually feel it coming out so I know its not anything related to my period or my birth control (I shouldn't be getting my period for another few weeks. So basically I don't know what to think. I'm going to call my doctor again, but I don't have much trust in him or in the hospital because if I was misdiagnosed with a UTI and I've had kidney problems or something worse all along, they don't know what they're doing. What is your opinion? Could it just be a really bad UTI that is hard to treat, a kidney infection, a kidney stone, renal papillary necrosis, bladder cancer, fibroids? Because those are the things I have researched...I'm really scared about this so any advice would be good.
Answer: The symptom of chronic UTI can also be an indication of another condition called Interstitial Cystitis (an example only).
I would recommend a consultation with a Urologist (a doctor that diagnoses and treats diseases and disorders of the bladder such as Interstitial Cystitis) to see what they think could be going on.

Question: Medical professionals - my stepfather is having a nutrition IV that goes in his heart inserted, need info ..? I have never heard of this procedure, even with 17 years of caregiving in a hospice environment. My mom is scared to death. Can anyone tell me what this involves? Is it as risky as it sounds? Is this common practice?
To fill you in a bit.... he had prostate and bladder cancer. They did surgery and removed the tumor. Since the surgery he has not been able to tolerate any kind of oral nutricion (not even water). It's been a week. Now they are saying they HAVE to do this procedure. We NEED real info on this. I promised my mom I'd research it for her, but I don't even know where to begin. Any info would be greatly appriciated! Thanks so much.
Answer: it's done all the time, it is called total parenteral nutrition, TPN for short. An intravenous cathetar is placed in a large vessel, usually in the neck, sometimes in the shoulder or chest, and yes it goes near the heart, but NOT into the heart. The reason is so the blood is moving swiftly and can dilute the solution rapidly the closer to the heart the cathetar is. This is not an unusual therapy, I personally have cared for many many patients that have recieved TPN, and it always benefitted them, gave them strength to heal up, and all of them eventually began eating again. Don't freak out, tell your mom to relax, it really is a good way to go.
