Bladder cancer is the rapid growth of abnormal cells in the lining of the bladder. Bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the United States.1 One or more bladder cancers may develop at the same time in different parts of the bladder.
Bladder cancer is usually curable if it is diagnosed while the cancer is still contained in the bladder. More than 80% of bladder cancers are diagnosed at this early stage.2, 3
The bladder is the part of your urinary tract that stores urine. See an illustration of the female urinary system or male urinary system.

Crystals are more a symptom of kidney stones (which is just a crystal which hasn't passed).

Question: Bladder cancer in my Sheltie...end of the road symptoms? He is 11 & was diagnosed with bladder cancer from an utrasound 16 months ago & they gave him 6-12 months. I know he's lasted longer which is great...but how do I know when it's time? He still eats & pees, but seems much more lathargic lately...
Answer: I am sorry your Sheltie is suffering with bladder cancer. I recently lost my 11-year-old Scottie to kidney failure brought on from medication to treat bladder cancer. My heart goes out to you. Your best resource is working with your vet(s). They can help you judge when quality of life declines and let you know what point your dog is beginning to suffer. Once we were told that nothing else could be done for our girl, we made the painful choice to let her go before she began to suffer. Try thinking of 3 things that give his life quality. When he isn't able to do these things, it is definitely time to talk with your vet. It is a hard choice, but it is really a final gift you can give. I know, 11 years just isn't enough time.
Question: is mucos in the urine a symptom of bladder cancer? Along with urinary tract symptoms?
Answer: Mucus type discharge in the urine is most commonly related to and infection of either the bladder, prostate, urinary tract, or kidneys. Many (but not all) of these infections are sexually tranmitted. Signs of an infection may include yellow-green discharge from the ureathra, burning/difficult urination, low grade fever, and radiating pain in the lower back. It is advised that you see you physician to begin a course of antibiotics and usually a medication such as Uricet which will ease urination pain. It is also advised that you increase consumption of acidic fruit juices such as Cranberry during this time to increase the pH of your urine and help maintain UT patency.
Question: Do I have bladder cancer? Guys I'm soo worried I have bladder cancer. I've had some tests done.. no sign of infection. I had an ultrasound and cytology done a couple of months ago and the ultrasound showed what they believe are kidney stones, but these tests aren't accurate for diagnosing bladder cancer. Anyways I have symptoms that aren't characteristic of kidney stones sitting in your kidneys. I have pain in my bladder a lot, pain in my bladder when I urinate, blood, frequency and now I have lower back pain. All my symptoms sort of come and go day to day. I'm freaking out I have bladder cancer or some kind of cancer.. maybe prostate or urethral. Can anyone give me any thoughts. I have a ct scan booked for 2 weeks and yes of course I've seen doctors.
just turned 26 years old. what a birthday.
been tested for std's and all kinds of infection. its neither.. just for some extra info
Answer: You are absolutely correct when you say that some of these tests are inaccurate. My sister who was 47 was diagnosed with gall stones and it took weeks for her to get the surgery and it was then they discovered she had 3rd stage pancreatic cancer.Do yourself a favour and get that mri sooner rather than later to ensure a correct diagnosis. Hope it all goes well.
Question: How serious can cancer in the bladder be? I have a friend who told me he has had cancer in the bladder for the past 4 years. The only treatment he has been receiving in hospital is... they get rid of the tumours with laser, which he has been doing on annual basis. Last year, the doc said that he would possibly need some radio- and chemotherapy but, at the end, he was told that it would not be necessary. He was relieved as he knew that those treatments usually give a lot of side effects. He says he does not feel anything, no symptoms that is. Can anybody tell me more about cancer in the bladder?
Answer: 75-80% of bladder cancers are superficial. I am not aware of any of them being removed by laser usually it is done by TURBT. 80% of these cancers recur. The typical treatment after TURBT is BCG once a week for 6 weeks and then follow up cystos in the office. It is not unusual to see someone with bladder cancer for 15-20 years. Chemo and radiation are usually reserved for advanced disease after the bladder is removed. This is a major surgery. Once this cancer invades the muscle there is a 50% mortality rate within the first 18 months.
