Bone Cancer Life Expectancy
Question: Bone Cancer Life Expectancy? What is the longest someone has lived with bone cancer, and what is the shortest?
Answer: my second cousin had cancer and my great-aunt's daughter had bone cancer and my great-aunt's daughter lasted 2yrs or 3yrs i believe before she died but my 2nd cousin died on march 9th of lastyear from cancer which had basically spread throughout her body and resulted in her cancer being stage four and considered terminal.
Question: bone marrow cancer life expectancy??? what is the life expectancy for a person that has bone marrow cancer
Answer: Multiple Myeloma (primary cancer of the bone marrow)?
MM is not curable, but can be managed with chemo. The prognosis depends on how far along the disease is (the staging)
MM has a median survival of 62 months for stage 1 disease, 45 months for stage 2 disease, and 29 months for stage 3 disease.
Unless you're talking about Osteosarcoma or Ewing's sarcoma, both of which are more common than MM, but neither are technically marrow cancers, but primary bone cancers. I don't know which you are talking about, so I will just hit them all.
Osteosarcoma is usually treated by surgery, IE removing the affected bone, and has a terrible life expectancy. Regardless of grade, localised osteosarcomas have a 5 year survival rate of about 55%. That means that 55 out of every 100 people with this type of cancer live for at least 5 years.
If osteosarcoma has spread to another part of the body, fewer than 10 people out of 100 (10%) live for more than 5 years.
For Ewing's sarcoma that is localised and hasn't spread elsewhere in the body, about 60 out of every 100 people (60%) live for at least 5 years after their diagnosis.
If Ewing's sarcoma has spread to another part of the body, about 1 in 5 people (20%) will live for at least 5 years after their diagnosis.
Question: Life expectancy bone cancer? 80 year old male
Answer: It really depends on where and what kind of bone cancer this 80 year old male has, but life expectancy could be from 6 months to 5 years.
Question: What is the life expectancy for bone marrow cancer victims?
Answer: You'll need to be more specific as to the type.
My only experience has been with multiple myeloma.
Since it's a metabolism driven cancer, life expectancy will vary by age. It also attacks the liver and kidneys, so damage to those organs must be taken into account also.
My 82 year old grandfather lived 18 months. A friend's 50 year old husband who had it only lived 4 months.
Even with good treatment and monitoring, the prognosis is not good.
Question: anyone know the life expectancy of a person with progressive bone cancer?
Answer: I'm guessing you mean a cancer that had metastasized (spread) to the bones. Many types of cancer do this.
The most common ones are breast cancer in women, prostate cancer in men, and lung cancer in both sexes.
This is not a curable situation with these metastatic carcinomas, but sometimes we can buy quality time with systemic treatments using chemotherapy of hormonal therapy. Radiation can also help with comfort / pain control though it may not enhance survival time.
A very rough guess, not knowing the details of the case, might be in the range of one year to 18months. Five year survivals would be unlikely - - BUT - everyone is different.
We can't predict one person's future course with any accuracy even if we knew more details.
Question: What is it with cancers and life expectancy? Every mag i usually read, it says lots of medical problems everyday, such as Vitamin supplements can reduce your life expectancy, drinking fluoride water may cause bone cancer in boys, hair dyes are likely to cause Leukemia (ALL) and people who live near nuclear chemical factories are at risk of developing non-hodkins lymphoma and leukemia.
This has to be true, it was all over the news?
Is that why we got to try and stop polluting the air and clean out the water pipes to reduce the risks? It's just crazy!
Whats your opinion on this?
Answer: Please do not assume that because something is said in a newspaper or magazine that it is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
You sound most confused about this matter and it is not the sort of matter to worry about without knowing the facts which are known and the 'facts' which are not proven and/or are just rumours.
The best answers can invariably be found at your doctor's surgery because if he/she does not know he/she can refer you to someone who is experienced in such matters and give good guidance as to where truth lies. I know that not all doctors know all the answers. Not all the answers are available - hence all the research.
Set your mind at rest as far as you are able or life will be a miserable existence and that we do not want.
Question: Once prostate cancer has spread to the bones and lymph nodes how long is life expectancy? My father in law has had prostate cancer for 7 years and it has moved to the spine. He now has 12 tumors in the spine and it has spread to the lymph nodes. His psa was 60 last month and today it was 84. How bad is this and how long is the life expectancy after the cancer is in the lymph nodes?
Chemotherapy is no longer working (hasn't worked for months) and all other treatments have failed. Now he is going to be given just pain meds. He is 74 and he has diabetes.
Its in the lower lymph nodes only right now.
Answer: Life expectancy is very short; only a couple of months. My brother died of Lymphoma last year. I'm so sorry about your FIL. Let him know how much you love and appreciate him now. But be careful to make it seem like he has a death sentence hanging over his head, unless he has accepted his impending fate. My brother wouldn't accept that he was terminally ill until he took his last breath. He became very upset if we behaved like he was a dying man. Take care.
Question: What is life expectancy once metastatic cancer is found in the bones and lungs? The primary source of cancer has not been found. The cancer is in a male age 65.
Answer: It could be around or less than 3 months. Although no one would like to speculate on this but that's what it mostly were in similar cases that I read. God bless!
Question: 12 yr old cat with bone cancer - how long to live? My 12 yr old cat (Oscar - neutered male) has blood tests that indicate 99% probability of cancer. No symptoms yet - which leads us to think it's bone cancer.
2 lots of blood tests taken 2 months apart with no change in results so probability is very small that it is anything other than cancer.
He's under the very best vet care, but given his age, the vet and I are reticent to do invasive procedures.
I've been trying to find references for expected length of life and quality of life if he is not treated by chemo drugs, but can only find web pages specific to radiation/chemo treatment.
Can you help me find references?
At this stage he seems 100% healthy and normal, so the blood test results were a huge shock. He's a large cat and was a stray as a kitten, so he only had a life expectancy of 14 year or so. The last 11.5 have been pretty good for him. :)
So no-one's got any references?
Yes, I have gotten second opinions and we are continuing to treat conservatively and do what non-invasive tests we can.
I have googled, as mentioned earlier, and have not found any references for life expectancy and life quality expectancy without treatment.
While I appreciate all of your comments, no-one's actually been able to answer my question so far. So I can't choose a best answer yet.
Answer: I would seek another opinion from an Oncology Vet. Take the bloodwork results with you when you go. I'm assuming that the calcium levels are elevated? That is usually an indicator of cancer somewhere in the body. Has the vet done x-rays to look for cancer? I wouldn't rest on bloodwork alone.
Question: multiple myeloma life expectancy? my Father was diagnosed with MM 4 months ago, he is only 43 and thats very young for this type of cancer. The doctors caught it in the final stage (stage 3 for this type) and they only think that he had the cancer for a very short time, approx. 6 months. He is missing parts of his ribs, coller bone, and spine. The doctor says it looks as though his bones are swiss cheese. He has a 5 pound lifting weight limit. I want to know how long my children have with there grandpa, and the doctors are avoiding the question. Can anyone give me a clue as to how long?
he is only been reciving bone strengtheners, radiation, and thalidomide, no chemo
Answer: The problem is you can never be sure how long an individual patient has. It is a notoriously difficult thing to predict and even experts have been left embarrassed after their predictions. Nowadays most doctors are reluctant to comment on life expectancy do to various reasons including litigation. However most experienced physicians will have some idea and opinion as to how much time a patient will have depending on his/her experience as well as well as certain objective criteria.
On average a typical multiple myeloma patient has a life expectancy of 3 years after diagnosis.
There are several objective criteria that can be used to asses prognosis the most reliable of which is the serum beta microglobulin level. In addition the C-reactive protein and serum creatinine are also useful in predicting prognosis. Even these indicators can never accurately predict how long an individual patient has, although they are useful in giving estimates or probablities regarding outcome. For example most MM patients with high microglobulin, C reactive protein levels and poor renal function will not be expected survive more than a few months, but it may be possible for isolated patients to survive maybe a year.
My personal advice would be for you and your children to cherish every moment you have with him. Don't focus on how long he has or when he is going to die. I know its easier said than done and you must be going through very tough times right now, but I believe that would be the best for your father and your children.
