Bone Cancer Research
Question: Can secondary bone cancer be cured? The case I'm talking about is 19 years old, with cancer that now spread to the bones. Her doctor gives her 3 months of life. I researched and found treatments for bone cancer, but they don't specify whether or not they can really cure it. I would like to know the possibilities of her survival if one of the treaments is taken and how many years she can live due to treatment. I guess it's not possible for her to become old...Thank you.
Answer: You have described metastasized cancer that has spread from its primary site to the patient's bones. This is fundamentally different from primary bone cancer, both in terms of treatment options and prognosis. Chemotherapy and radiation may slow the progress of her cancer's growth, but the outlook is not good.
If the patient's oncologist has suggested a 3 month time frame, then that implies the spread of her cancer is extensive and not responding to treatment. The doctor's statement indicates that she will pass away very soon. Sorry.
Question: Prostate Cancer Bone Metastasis - Testosterone, DHEA Progesterone, Estriol Supplementation? There seem to be two views points on Testosterone and DHEA:
(a) Testosterstone and DHEA Supplementation can worsen prostate cancer.
(b) Testerstone harms only at less less than adequate levels (whose T levels are stuck in the middle - less than nomal but not minimal). Both in very low levels and at high levels these harmones will help in combating cancer.
We know that in majority of cases Testosterone blockade helps control the disease.
There is some anecdotal (http://www.mercola.com/1998/archive/natural_progesterone2.htm) evidence that Progesterone local application has benefitted advanced prostate metastasis.
Has any research been done with Testosterone/DHEA Progesterone supplements on Advanced PCa persons.
I am interested to know if anyone with advanced Prostate malignancy or breast malignancy on the bone has tried DHEA and/or Testosterone, Progesterone, Estriol supplementation and has perceived benefits.
Accurate info will be of great relevance.

Answer: For a fact, testosterone supplementation will worsen prostate cancer
I don’t know if DHEA supplementation or HGH injections will worsen prostate cancer. If anybody knows, I am interested in the answer myself. Please reply to this question. It is a good one. Reply to this posting and to allanbrandt@yahoo.com
Androgen depravation using Lupron or castration is first line treatment of prostate cancer if it has spread, even if it has spread to the bone. If that is not enough, sometimes they will add a second line hormonal treatment such as high dose Ketoconazol to quickly lower your testosterone level to almost zero, but monitor weekly for liver damage using high dose Ketoconazol. (I learned this the hard way). Usually there is a response from the above treatments, but only temporarily.
Estrogen based treatments such as Megace which contains progesterone, or DES which contains estrogen, are not effective treatments if prostate cancer is already in the bone. Estriol supplementation may be similar. Not effective but cant hurt. Prostate cancer hates all female hormones.
Question: clicking bones- bone cancer??? i have a doctors appointment on monday because of my clicking bones. everytime i walk, my feet constantly click, my knees, hips and wrists do it too.
im 16.
i researched it and it could be a symptom of bone disease, bone cancer, arthritis, and cysts in the joints :|
im probably being a hypochondriac, but whats the likeliness its something serious, and what other things could it be??
Answer: It is very unlikely to be bone cancer, particularly as it is in so many different places...you would have lots of other symptoms if it was that. If you had arthritis you would have pain and possible swelling in your joints.
Sometimes joints do click and often it is caused by relatively lax joint capsules that allows more than a usual amount of movement. Clicking joints are very common and usually harmless so I would say don't worry. Just keep your appointment with the doctor to put your mind at rest and stop researching symptoms on the internet....it is guaranteed to scare you ;-)
Question: Is it normal to experience gerneral aches and pains around your body? I don't know if this is growing pains or anything but I feel light pain near my hip bones on both sides. It's not severe but it comes every few minutes and usually goes away the next day. I've been doing some research on bone cancer, and they said not to mistaken general aches and pains with a cancer symptom.
Is it true that everyone experiences minor aches and pains around their body?
Ok, I'm 13 years old.
Answer: You have no idea lol. When I was younger I would get the most horrible pains in my legs. It felt like the middle of my bones were pure ice. Turns out that they were just growing pains, I'm 6'3" now. It would help to know your age and sex. If you're still pretty young then I would bet it's just growing pains, but then again it never hurts to get it checked out by a doctor. If they're worried about cancer they will probably do some blood tests to see whats really going on, if not they might just suggest taking a pain killer or anti-inflammatory drug like Ibuprofen to help with the pain.
Oh well if you're 13 then I'm 99% sure it's growing pains. I think the last major pain I had was when I was 17 or 18 and I still get maybe one small one a year and I'm 22.
Question: Where was bone cancer discovered? pls. hurry up. i need this for my research paper thats do tomorrow
Answer: www.cancer.gov

Question: Cancer Cure....? I don't believe in giving money to any cancer research even though I have had about 3 family members die from it. There is already a cure for cancer found in Africa that is HIGHLY illegal in America. You make the herb into a tea and then drink it once a day for a week and the cancer goes away. Why is it fair that devloping countries get to have a cure for cancer that is natural and does not kill the immune system by injecting poisin in your body (chemo) but the fat cats at all the pharmicutial companies can watch their and other peoples's family memebers die and not do anything. A cure for cancer was found, but it was kept hush-hush because people wouldn't pay the companies al kinds of unnessary money. My aunt who died at 50 who had bone cancer that put her in a whole lot of pain could have lived 30, 40, maybe even 50 more years. Does this make me a bad person like some people think? What are your thoughts on the subject?
Answer: There will not be a cure for cancer due to the fact that there is so much money to be made off of cancer. If we cured it would take away the cash cow. I agree with you all the way.
Question: family member with bone marrow cancer? my mom recently had a full blood test done where they told her that her platelet and hemoglobin levels were high. she has an appointment with the hemotologist at the cancer center a week from today. my husband and i decided to research these elevated conditions and found a lot of results trailing to bone marrow cancer? we are very worried and concerned with whats going on. opinions on possible other conditions? also survivial rate for bone marrow cancer. would she have any symptoms for bone marrow cancer.
her wrist has always bothered her (it would hurt but she would just go on and not think to much about it, she has arthritis) but recently the doctor told her it was fractured. she cant seem to pin point a time when this happen.
thanks for any answers!
Answer: No one can answer your question because it is not specific enough. Bone marrow cancer could mean any of four major types or the five or six lesser known Leukemias or even Multiple Myleoma. You probably need to wait for a definitive diagnosis and than ask the doctor questions.
You can read more about Leukemia and other blood diseases:
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org/hm_lls
Multiple Myleoma
http://www.cancer.net/patient/Cancer+Types/Multiple+Myeloma
You can locate the different types of Leukemia:

Word of advice . . .ignore statistics and 'survival rates' . . they are not meant to define an individual . . . every single person responds differently . . people are not statistics.
Question: When was bone cancer discovered? i need help with my research
Answer: I don't know the answer, but one place to start would be with James Ewing, who was the first to identify osteoma, which is one kind of cancer of the bone.
Question: my dads just being diagnosed with mutiple myeloma its like cancer of the blood that feeds on the bone marrow.? Was wondering if anyone could do a quick research and give me ideas some good foods and that. And has any one knew any one thats had it?
Answer: Hi,
First thing I would do is search Yahoo Answers for questions on Myeloma?
there are 96 questions from the last 2 years - you may see some of the questions you have.
For food - Myleoma makes you anemic - so iron rich foods are inportant (cream of wheat, red meat, etc) and iron suplelments.
You probably would want to get more info on the care and treatment side - best booklet is from MMRF:
www.multiplemyeloma.org - explains pretty much everything.
You also will want to contact the local support groupe for myeloma, or if you want to talk to a myeloma nurse: the best place for that is at the other Myeloma ",org":
www.myeloma.org.
good luck - I have had myeloma for almost 3 years, diag at 42
Jewells
35 months and still here
Question: What's the best way to get a job with The American Cancer Society in either Northern IL or Southern to mid WI? I want to get a job with the American Cancer Society for a few reasons. The biggest reason is because my aunt died of breast cancer in 1989 and one of my friends died of bone cancer in 2005, my grandfather has cancer now, one of my uncles had cancer and I myself am a cancer survivor. Cancer is riddled through my family as you can tell. This is something I'm very passionate about. I have some great ideas that could help bring in a lot of money to go to research for cancers. The problem is that I can't find any job opportunities. I can find a lot of volunteer opportunities, which would be awesome except for the fact that I need a paying job. I feel like this is something that I can do and do extremely well. I heard that they don't always post there positions on the internet. Can anyone help me?
Answer: I'm afraid the bad news is, the country now has about 8.5% of it's people in the same boat as you! That's many millions of people out of work. All I can say is you just have to keep on trying! Best of luck to all of us - we are going to need it, along with some good old-fashioned perseverance!
Question: How do you start a foundation/charity/anything like these? I want to make a difference in the world.. I love animals, and my aunt has been diagnosed with breast cancer and bone cancer. I would like to make her proud, and help raise money for research.
I feel overwhelmed when I hear about poor animals who have no homes, and need treatment but no one will pay for it. What can I do to help them? P.S. I'm 16 so would I even be able to start a foundation or charity?
Answer: No you cannot start your own charity. Besides there are numerous organized charities for animals. Search one out in your area, volunteer your time and help with fundraising.
Question: How long can Valley Fever stay dormant in a greyhound before causing real heath problems? My greyhound raced in Arizona but has live in BC with us for 5 almost 6 years. She has always had minor coughing and lameness due to what we thought was arthritis. In November of 2006 she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer). OS tends to take dogs quickly and we opted for pain management only but now 9 months later she has a large tumor in her right leg and is sometimes completely lame and other times looks fine and runs full speed. She eats well and most of the time is a happy dog.
Someone has suggested this could be Valley Fever but is it possible almost 6 years later? Vets up here do not know of Vallet fever so i am trying to do research before bringing this possibility to them.
Answer: Symptoms show up 3 weeks after infection - coughing, fever, weight loss, lack of appetite and lack of energy. If your grey hasn't had all those symptoms ever since you've had her, she can't have valley fever.
However, there's a simple blood test that can be done to be sure - it's called a cocci titer.
I'm so very sorry your girl has bone cancer. My oldest guy is having pains and limping - and my first thought was, of course, bone cancer. He doens't have it - he's got some rather serious neck problems which we're treating right now with acupuncture and chiro treatments. I'm praying they work.
Best wishes to you and your girl.
Question: What's the name of the 60's movie about a pod that sucks the bones from people. The pod then spits? The pod has a trunk that attaches to the humans, sucks the bones. It then splits into, oozing "spaghetti" and so on until there's a lot of them, killing the people. If I remember right, it was started from a cancer research lab that mutated a cell.
Answer: Island of Terror (1966)
IMDb review:
In the Pitkeys Island, located northeast of England close to Ireland, while Dr. Lawrence Phillips (Peter Forbes-Robertson) is researching a cure for the cancer in his laboratory, he accidentally creates a "silicate" creature that sucks human and animal bones. The local police officer finds the "boneless" body of a local and Dr. Reginald Landers (Eddie Byrne) calls Dr. Brian Stanley (Peter Cushing), a specialist in bones, who also invites Dr. David West (Edward Judd) to travel to the island to investigate the event. The girlfriend of Dr. West, Toni Merrill (Carole Gray), borrows his father's helicopter to bring the team to the island, and imposes the condition of staying with them. Together, they try to find a way of destroying the weird monsters with the support of the locals.

I re-watched this one not long ago, so the slicates are fresh in my mind~creepy critters!
Question: Anyone have a problem with the morals of John Edwards? I know it is said that Edwards' wife told him to run regardless of her situation. I would have a VERY difficult time voting for someone that would leave his wife in her condition while he travels around the country in what could be her final bit of time. If Edwards doesn't even care about his wife enough to stay with her, how can we trust him to care for our country?
Don't tell me her "type of cancer" will allow her to live for YEARS." I work in cancer research. When cancer metastasizes to the bone, it is stage 4 and VERY serious, so don't tell me they expect her to have 10 yrs etc. You don't know this. This COULD (quite realistically, though not definitely) be her last year.
Um, I do know his wifes diagnosis... Metastatic breast cancer. When cancer metastasized to the bone, it is always stage 4. That is the defintion.
Source: I am a cancer researcher. Did I not say that?
Slapnut...you are 100% WRONG. Look it up.
Answer: I have a problem with the way he made his money ambulance chasing. They made the decision; it's their choice. I wouldn't have made that choice, but it's wasn't mine to make.

Question: Bone Marrow Transplant thesis? I am doing a research paper on bone marrow transplants on children with cancer, and I really need help with a thesis statement for this. I have NO idea what I should write for my thesis.
10 points for the best answer!
Well I was going to do a research paper on bone marrow transplantation in children but I had no idea how to tie it to a thesis. I don't know how to get more specific. I just need any topic idea and or thesis about bone marrow transplantation on children.
Answer: You should be more specific.
