Question: Can a traumatic brain injury lead to brain cancer? And what environmental factors, if there's any, that can cause brain cancer? How can someone have brain cancer even if there are no history of brain cancer in his family?

Answer: Exposure to certain toxins can increase the chances of developing cancer (such as in smoking) but injury is generally not associated with cancer.

Question: Can Noise Cancelling Headphones increase the chance of having brain cancer? Always talking on a cell phone can increase the chance of having brain cancer. A noise cancelling headphone uses a battery to operate. It emits frequency to interfere the noise in the background and it is 85% noise cancellation. I am wondering whether it will have the same effect as a cell phone which can increase the chance of having brain cancer if we talk on it too often. I have ear pain and that's why I don't want to use ear plugs.

Answer: No. Active noise cancellation headphones emit in the audio range (and phase inverted version of the surrounding noise). Telephones emits in the hundreds of millions of hertz (cycles/sec) range. Which heats up and vibrates your braincells possibly eventually leading to their mutation and a tumor in some people. Basic rule of thumb, if its a natural range, natural food, or a naturally occuring chemical it probably won't give you cancer. If its man-made, a frankenfood, or is made by a guy in a lab coat it may give you cancer. If you get ear pain it could be a result of the pressure from the firm fit of the ear plug or the volume. Use it at a reasonable volume (snug headphones can cause headphone cause they direct sound pressure right onto the drum with no ventilation of pressure). Rest your ears. Keep them dry. Don't use cotton wool buds (Q-tips) inside your ear. Clean them with a MILD 3% hydrogen peroxide solution if they get waxy using an eyedropper) MAKE SURE ITS A DILUTE 3% NO STRONGER.

Question: Can a person with terminal brain cancer obtain life insurance? Recently my sister has been diagnost with terminal brain cancer. She has been given 6-12 months to live. She is a 50 year old living in Michigan. We are wondering if there is any chance of her obtaining life insurance. If so from whom?

Answer: Not likely. And if you did find one that agreed, I would be very hesitant to trust them. Recently upgraded my term-life policy from work, (before knowledge of brain tumor) and they wanted "eligibility of insurability" forms (about two weeks after surgery). First question was "Are you currently receiving medical treatment for...." Declined increase in benefits, dropped coverage. Imagine that.

Question: How can I make a patient with lung and brain cancer more comfortable? My mom has lung cancer that has spread to the brain. Her head is titled down and can't lay down right or eat a lot.

Answer: What a great responsibility you have. Get into contact with Hospice. They will help you and show you what you can do for her. They will also be able to assess whether she needs help with nutrition or pain relief.

Question: Why does a brain cancer patient develop slurred speech? I have a friend who's breast cancer has just spread to her brain. She is on many treatments, and her speech has become a little slurred, slowed, and sometimes difficult. What is causing this? Will it fix itself or stay like that forever?

Answer: There are several possibilities regarding the speech problem: * The tumor(s) are damaging her brain's speech center * The chemotherapy drugs and/or other medication are impacting her speech center * She had a stroke. Youir friend has stage 4 breast cancer with brain metastasis, so her prognosis is very poor. While chemo may slow the progress of her disease, you need to have realistic expectations about her future. The tone of your remark, "will it fix itself or stay like that forever?", suggests that you do not understand her prognosis.

Question: Has there been a real increase in the amount of brain cancer? I can think of 4 people I've known who either have it, or have already died of it, plus several famous people seem to have had it as well. Is there an actual statistical uptick in the amount of brain cancer? Part B--some people say that IF there is an uptick, it might be due to cell phone use. While I accept that as a possible explanation, could it also be possible that dental X rays might have caused some brain cancers, too?

Answer: Well, i am 80 years old, and in my time i have heard every mortal thing given as the cause of cancers, but very very few are ever proved to be right.After the atom bomb tests that was to blame,so was SPUTNIK then luminous watches, the list goes on, and still we have no definitive reason.Lung cancer is put down to smoking,OK but what about the rest,...breast, testicular,liver, bowel and so on. My personal view is we must be ingesting some thing that our body does not like.I do hope its not chocolate cause i love it.

Question: Does anyone know the odds of a boxer getting brain cancer? We lost a boxer to brain cancer last August and now I'm really scared our remaining boxer will get it. So I was wondering what the exact odds are, if anyone knows them.

Answer: I was looking for a Boxer last summer and I decided against it. I have a very good friend that is a retired vet tech, and she told me that in her vet clinic, she only saw one Boxer in over 20 years that didn't die of cancer, usually before the age of 7. I'm not sure if brain cancer was the common thing, but it sure scared the poop out of me about that breed. I surely don't mean to discourage you, I just wanted to state what she told me. Also, there are many other breeds that are "prone" to cancer at a fairly young age. I don't know what the odds are, but I sure hope your odds are good. Sorry to hear about your other Boxer.

Answer: I wouldn't lie to you, honey. I'm a nurse & I can honestly tell you it is very very rare. At your age your body goes through a lot of changes & you may be getting minor symptoms & we all think we've got the worse thing possible. You get a few headaches or a dizzy spell & watching TV (esp. MD shows like House) & we've got the same thing as on TV. I thought I had cancer a few times. I didn't. Not ever. Please try not to worry.But if you do have some problem that really doesn't go away, it wouldn't hurt to see your MD.Good luck.

Question: Do many people die from brain cancer after it is removed? My brother had brain cancer about 9 years ago, but he had the tumor removed and went through radiation and chemotherapy.At the moment he is doing fine, but I found some statistics that said even living five years was immprobable.

Answer: Treatment of all sorts of cancer is much more aggressive, these days, with rather better outcomes. Edit: There are a lot of out of date articles and stats online still.

Answer: Brain cancer occurs in about 7 out of every 100,000 people. Is your risk reduced from that? No. Is it reduced from keeping it plastered to your ear? Maybe. Some researchers think there maybe a link between cell phones and brain cancer, but no one knows yet. Keeping a cell phone in a shirt pocket could cause injury if you have a pacemaker.

Answer: Brain cancer for adults is not as common as lung, prostate, breast, colon, and stomach cancer. Any particular group: it can affect young children aged 0-10 very common in girls and older people 65+ It sometimes is genetic To prevent it, live a healthy lifestyle, eat plenty of anti-oxidants and recognize the symptoms of brain cancer quickly before it is too late (in stages 3-5) Symptoms: Amnesia, fever for week+, intense headaches, nightmares, swollen lymph nodes, loss of function in hands, feet, thought. hope this helps

Answer: A lot depends on what sort of tumor it is, how big it is and which part of the brain it is in.

A friend was diagnosed with brain cancer, and she was told that whe will only have a few weeks to live. Right now, she is still functioning fairly well. What will happen over the next two weeks? Answer: As the cancer grows, the pressure it places on surrounding structures within the brain increases. This will increase the severity of the symptoms. Depending on the type of cancer it is (whether it's primary or a metastasis), the growth rate will vary. Obviously, faster growing cancers will cause the symptoms your friend is suffering from to increase in severity rather rapidly. Conversely, if the tumor is a slower growing one, your friend can live a relatively functional life for a long period of time. Therefore what you can expect to see in your friend can be quite variable. Generally speaking, if untreated, her current symptoms will worsen, and new symptoms may appear such as seizures, difficulty walking, loss of vision, memory loss, and personality changes. The usual cause of death in a patient with brain cancer would be respiratory failure. With more information, such as the type of cancer (if known), when it was diagnosed, and how the symptoms have progressed over time, I can provide you with a more specific answer.
