Question: How do I help my mom deal with cancer and the therapy? My mom has just been diagnosed with colon cancer and the oncologist said it had already spread to her lungs, she is starting chemo and radiation in 2 weeks. My question is ,how do i help her get thru this?I don'twant her to feel like she might be a burden or that she is at fault. She is my best friend and I am scared to loose her but I don't want her to be anymore scared than necessary.Any help is greatly appriciated.Thank you in advance
Answer: I feel for you and your Mum. I know exactly what you are going thru. My Mum was diagnosed with kidney cancer in may this year.. it spread to her liver and lung. It was a very aggressive cancer she past away two weeks ago. Im not sure how old you are but im 29 and found it extremely difficult and heartbreaking. My Mum was my best friend also, and was such a shock when she was diagnosed. My Mum also felt like she was a burden she lost her inderpendence, and i quit my job to be her full time carer which i wouldnt have changed for the world. It was extremely difficult, and i saw altough of horrific things as my mums disease progressed. All you can do is be there for her (which i know you will do) support her, take her to apps, help her with her medication etc. You will find inner straight to get thru this. Please contact me.
Question: Which exams are typically ordered to follow a year(s) after a successful colon cancer surgery? A person very dear to me had colon cancer in 2007 and had a successful surgery to remove the tumor. She also had some months of coadyuvant therapy (chemo?). There have been further (clean) colorectal exams but I wonder which other exams are ordered in the first year or two following the surgery to guard against possible spread to other organs?
She has regular blood exams, every 6 months. Had recently (1 yr) a colonoscopy that came out good. But no CT scan which is what worries me.
Answer: sounds like your friend had the same handling as my husband: surgery + adjuvant chemo. "Adjuvant chemo" is preventative - it's to mop up any loose cancer cells.
The followups will depend on the exact nature of the cancer (there are different types even within colon cancer ...e.g. adenocarcinoma) and the oncologist. Hubby has had
- colonoscopy immediately post chemo finishing
- CT scans immediately post chemo, and then every 6 months until 2 years from diagnosis
- blood tests every 6 months
He'll probably have another colonoscopy in 2010, and CT scans are now annual until 5 years.
Question: Is chemotherapy helps patient to survive from colon cancer?what is the best way to survive in this sickness? my family member diagnosed has a stage 2 colon cancer..i am very much scared and feeling hopeless, when i heard after operation he need a chemotherapy for survival, i had a bad feeling every time i heard a chemotherapy beacause all people ive known that undergo for this therapy is nothings happen.,please help us and pray for us.
thanks guys for all the answers..it helps a lot...
Answer: Mark I feel sorry for you. If you only knew who prayer helped. Please don't dismiss it until you've tired it. Prayers work wonders. If it wasn't for prayers, my sister would not be here today. What's the harm in trying both. Chemo and prayer. and I don't care in the least how many thumbs down I get because nothing will sway me either way.

Question: Are there any Stage IV Colon Cancer Survirors that can help me and give me advise??? ? I was diagnosed with Stage III Colon Cancer in 2008. I did my 6 mnth chemo therapy. At my first check up with my oncologist it was discovered that my cancer was still there and had spread to different organs also called metastatic cancer. Im currently trying to find out different options and want to hear from those that are currently going through this same situation. Im still waiting to hear from the doctors to see what my options will be. Im looking to hear from somone, am I alone on this ???? Please help me get through this !!!
Answer: My wife has cancer, and it seems that when cancer is in your life you talk about it. So, I was talking to somebody and he said he had stage 4 colon cancer. The doctor's gave him 18 months to live.
But he is also undergoing a "Clinical Study" that he is hoping will give him a better chance of surviving it longer. He had a new born baby with him and says that child is what makes him live each and every day. He says that he does not stress over the small stuff anymore. He says most everything is "small stuff".
He believes in God and is thankful for every minute he lives. So, I would check with your oncologist to find out if there are any clinical studies that you can apply for. Good luck,
Dave
Question: colon cancer stage 4 metastasis to liver and chest area? a friend's mom has colon cancer, came back after a surgery in hich they removed part of the intestines (surgery was a year and half ago) and she has been going through therapies (chemo/radiation) for the past 6 months now.
the cancer has attacked the lymphnodes and they see spots on liver and chest area. I have done a search on life expectancy but it is not clear to me how long she could survive in her state.
Does anyone who has experienced in friends or relatives the same scenario, know what we should expect? How long could she live?
as you kindly asked me for details I shall add> yes she does eat but not much. She went weeks without eating and now she is a little. She is always tired. They have not suggested hospice yet, but the relatives are thinking about it. She is due for a scan at the end of december or in january then we will know more. What they saw last was spots on the liver and in chest, and that was a month ago, maybe this time things will have changed.
Answer: I am so very sorry to hear about this. 11 years ago, at age 69, my Mother died from colon cancer that had spread to her liver and uterus. She only lived 7 weeks after diagnosis but she never had treatment like your friend's Mom and also today's treatments are much more effective than they used to be. Has her Dr. given any prognosis or suggested Hospice care? If he or she has suggested Hospice, that usually means that the life expectancy is 6 months or less although that doesn't mean that she can't live longer. Does she still have an appetite and does food taste good to her? When my Mom was going through this, nothing tasted good and she couldn't keep anything down. I tried so hard to find something, anything that she could eat to give her strength but her failing body rejected everything. I later read that this is very typical.
My one regret is that I didn't accept the fact that she was really going to die. I wish I would have talked to her more about how much I loved her and all that she meant to me.
I don't know if any of this will be helpful for you and your friend but I certainly know what you are going through and I will keep all of you in my prayers.
Question: My cousin has cancer can she survive? She had colon cancer, and after lots of therapy the doctors believed it was gone, but now it is back and has moved into her lungs and liver.
Has this happened to anyone before? And is there any possible way she will live?
She is 24 years old.
As far as i know she has gone chemotherapy and due to the colon cancer has to have a vesectomy bag.
i mean colostomy bag not vesectomy
Answer: What kinds of therapy has she had, if you don't mind me asking? Cancer rarely is ever gone, just in remission. Her life may be extended with radiation and chemo. Send her prayers.
It's a colostomy bag! She must've had part of her colon removed. Sounds like more chemo is in store for the poor girl.
Question: Asked this before but a few months back? Is there anyone out there who is going through Chemo Therapy for Colon cancer? I don't want to know if you got an aunt or someone you know has it but someone who is having Chemo themselves.
None of the answers are helpful, I've read everything there is to read and the doctors are not that willing to give answers to who else is having the same Chemo. I was looking for someone having the same Chemo, to exchange the downs with it and encourage each other to carry on if possible, because there are some o.k. times but also very bad patches.
Answer: I have had chemo, but not for colon cancer.
If you are looking for someone specifically with colon cancer to talk to, you may want to ask your doctor to references to local support groups, or if the doctor has another patient that may be willing to talk to you (the doc wont be able to give you their info, but can take your contact info, and give it to another patient if they are willing to talk to you about it).
Just an idea =>
Question: My mom was diagnosed with cancer during High School, will college consider how this affected my grades? Hello all, my mom recently finished her chemo therapy and had a tumor removed from her colon after being diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer about 4 months ago. The ordeal is slowly going to get better and will stop affecting everyday life soon but my grades from sub-par to awful FAST. I had a 3.2 weighted GPA going into Junior year, which isn't ever that great to begin with. But the thing is I'm really intelligent! I take pretty high level classes, Honors, one AP last year. Granted I used to super lazy, but I'm willing to step now and work, but I feel it's to late. :( So, if anyone knows how colleges consider events like these in an applicants life, please give me some advice!
As far as my other criteria, I've been in 3 plays. Student of the term. I'm rigorously involved in my school television program, where I received student of the term. I will get plenty of good recommendations from several teachers, including my mentor. Not to bashful, but I do have a good personality and social skills. I will be getting a job this summer, unclear as to where. I received "Advanced" on my MCAS which is Massachusetts equivalent to a required assessment test, on every single one. I plan on taking the SAT's twice, and will most likely receive in at least the top 60 percentile for each part, top 85 and above on math.
Now, those are my strong points, but that's just to give you all an of what I'm dealing with. I believe State school will be very possible for me, but my dream school is Emerson in Boston.
Please somebody give me some optimism.
Thanks in advance.
Answer: Your circumstances will be noted but don't use it as an excuse. You have to know how to play on words effectively to convince people.
They may let you through though. So good luck.
Question: For anyone who lost more than 30 percent of thier colon what to expect after surgery for eating? Someone I know has lost 40 percent of thier colon, they say 3 yrs later they cannot eat. What if any help can I give or advice on this? Exercise, therapy help would be great.
For women this is a women who got cancer from drinking and smoking. If you are a female and do both, pls stop now it could save your life.
Only serious answers pls. This is a matter of life and death for this person.
Answer: Is she unable to eat because she has no appetite or because she vomits or has diarrhea? She should try drinking some nutritional supplements like Boost or Ensure. She needs to stay away from fats as they will lead to loose stools. She needs to see a nutritionist to help her devise a diet that she can tolerate. Have her try oatmeal, usually the body can tolerate that. Vegetables need to be well cooked. Stay away from salads and fruits. Mashed potatoes are also usually well tolerated.
Question: has anybody heard of this hoxsey treatment which is a herbal therapy done in tijuana mexico,? that claims to cure cancer? the reason i ask is because my dad has cancer ,and i heard this wholeistic healing can heal, but yet i am skeptic, anyways i wonder if any1 has any ideas, oh and my dad has colon cancer that spread to the liver
Answer: Hi Curious
Im would not doubt they would be able to cure in mexico. They are able to use methods known to us, but are surpressed by our own FDA dept. I have seen my uncle cure himself of lympnomia cancer by doing several cleanses (colon, liver, kidney, ect) while doing a juice fast (60 days). It wasnt an easy task, but if you do some research on the strategy Im mentioning and your uncle is really committed to a change of lifestyle then I believe he can cure himself. Here are a few cancer remedies and testimonials.
Cause
For many years Dr. Christopher taught that cancer is not an isolated problem in the body. If the cancer breaks out in a place where we have an old injury or a weakened portion in the body it only indicates that the cancer is in the bloodstream. It only accumulates, like a boil or an ulcer, in a weakened area and drains the poisons in the area. The medical profession cuts it out and says, "Well, the cancer's all gone!" The cancer breaks out in another place. The bloodstream must be cleaned. The Red Clover Combination or even Red Clover alone has a powerful alterative effect to clean the bloodstream.
Herbal Aids
1. Red Clover: is a very useful and wonderful alterative agent for counteracting scrofulous and skin diseases, as an antidote to cancer, and as an efficient remedy in bronchitis and spasmodic affections. Its healing properties make an excellent addition to alterative compounds. You will find this an effective and reliable remedy in wasting-disease and for weakly and delicate children. The warm infusion is soothing to the nerves. Anal: Inject a strong infusion of the tea five or six times daily, and also drink internally.Drink four or more times daily on an empty stomach. Vaginally: Inject a strong tea with a bulb syringe (holding the vagina closed after insertion to force the tea around the head of the womb), retain several minutes before expelling, five or six times daily.Dr. Thomson suggested a cancer plaster which is widely recommended. Cover the Red Clover flowers with water and boil for one hour. Then strain and reduce the liquid until it is the consistency of tar. It can be spread on a clean cloth and applied to external cancers. This is not one hundred percent verified in all cases where it has been tried, but together with the tea administered internally there have been many reports of successful healing with the treatment. If there is a cancer in the rectum you can give an injection (small herbal enema). Bethel says she has seen many cancers disappear with treatment of Red Clover.
2. Dr. Thomson's Famous Cancer Plaster: "Take the heads of red clover, and fill a brass kettle, and boil them in water for one hour; then take them out and fill the kettle again with fresh ones, and boil them as before in the same liquor. Strain it off and press the heads to get out all the juice, then simmer it over a low fire, till it is about the consistency of tar, when it will be fit for use. Be careful not to let it burn. When used it should be spread on a piece of bladder, split and made soft. It is good to cure cancers, sore lips and old sores.
3. Anti-Cancer Remedy: See formula using red clover, poke root, licorice root, cascara sagrada, sarsaparilla, prickly ash, burdock, buckthorn, stillingia, Oregon grape root, peach bark and chaparral.
4. Cancer of the Breast (poultice): See formula using poke root and bayberry.
5. Cancerous Sores (ointment): See formula using poke root, yellow dock and blood root.
6. Chaparral or Creosote Bush: It is especially known for specific action in cancer and arthritis. It was considered to be a cure-all by many Indians. It is a potent healer to the urethral tract, and to lymphatics. It tones up the system and rebuilds the tissue. It cleanses the lower bowel and tones peristaltic muscles. It is very bitter, but to the needy and courageous, it works fast for difficult conditions.Cancer, arthritis, rheumatism, etc.: Drink the tea (infusion for 3 weeks, after which the capsules or tablets may be used.
Testimonials
1. Natural Juices to Prevent Cancer: Although many women feel obliged to check their breasts regularly for lumps, and to have X-rays if they suspect anything might be wrong, this approach sometimes can present more problems than help. During 1977, at least 100 women lost breasts unnecessarily because they had been misdiagnosed for breast cancer. Sometimes a cell may appear cancerous under the microscope but behave like a benign tumor. And women who undergo radical mastectomy do not have a better survival rate from cancer than those who have less than radical surgery.
From a natural point of view, cutting out the cancer does not solve the problem, anyway. Cancer appears because there is something basically wrong in the body. Cutting it out may stop it in that particular area for the time being, but it can and does appear somewhere else.
Far better to follow Dr. Christopher's three-day cleanse, mucusless diet, and herbal formulas, such as his red clover combination. Of particular importance is his liver and gall formula, because a healthy liver plays such an active role in combating cancer.
Incidentally, many assert that prolonged breastfeeding helps prevent breast cancer.
Other herbs used to combat cancer are calendula, red clover, wheat grass juice, soaked figs and fig juice, blue violet, parsley, poke root, buckthorn, yellow dock, soaked and ground apricot pits (with their fruit), flaxseed, garlic, chaparral, burdock root, licorice root, echinacea, pau d'arco.
Many have had excellent results taking regular doses of carrot juice, perhaps mixed with celery and red beet juice. Exercise is paramount to recovery and swimming is indicated as the best exercise for diminishing cancer in the breast.
2. Man Cures Cancer with Carrot, Celery and Grape Juice: A man at eighty years old was diagnosed with cancer throughout his body. The family gave him carrot and celery juice along with the blood cleansing formula [Red Clover Combination] in capsule form. They would alternate the carrot and celery juice with grape juice. In four months' time the doctors could not find any cancer cells. They didn't believe it was the same man.
3. Dr. Christopher's Black Ointment: From a letter to Dr. Christopher. "We have used your Black Ointment with great results--I had skin cancer on my forehead--in six weeks it healed up Beautifully."
4. Comfrey: Dr. Charles MacAllister, M.D., was interested in the use of comfrey as a healing agent. He had written a paper in the 1896 edition of the British Surgical Journal, Lancet. In it, he gave his philosophy concerning the bloodstream and irregular cell growth. Dr. MacAllister wanted to look up his paper and noticed an article in the same issue by a Professor William Thompson, President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Thompson recorded a case of a man who had been diagnosed as having a malignant tumor on his face. The patient had undergone surgery of the palate in an attempt to remove the cancer.
A month later, the cancer returned. This time it ran rampant throughout the patient's head. They gave up on cutting it out. It had gone too far, and they sent him home. Three months later he returned to Thompson's office and was examined. Thompson noted that the cancer had completely disappeared. The patient told Dr. Thompson that he had been applying comfrey poultices to the swelling and that it had gradually disappeared. The patient had a custom-made palate to fill in the hole left by surgery of the hard palate. Thompson states in the report that although he knows nothing of the use of comfrey, he does not believe that it would remove a sarcomatous tumor. This story goes on in detail about what MacAllister learned about comfrey.
5. Black Ointment: From a letter to Dr. Christopher: A few years ago, about 2, I wrote to tell you that I used the black ointment for skin cancer and got perfect results. The Hershey Medical Center doctor wanted to refer me to a Skin Cancer Specialist, but I told him I was going to try the home remedy that an Herbalist Doctor recommended. Needless to say, he was persistent, and wanted me to go to the Specialist, but I was also persistent and told him it was my body and I would try the remedy you recommended, first. Praise the Lord-in 6 weeks it was all cleared up and that was over 2 years ago. My husband is presently using the Black Ointment on his nose for Skin Cancer.
Question: Did you know this about Canadian health care? What makes you think the US would be any different? * A 16% higher cancer death rate in Canada
* An eight week wait for radiation therapy for cancer patients
* 42% of Canadians die of colon cancer vs. 31% in the US
* Cutbacks in diagnostic testing
* The best meds for chemo therapy are not available
* No way out of the system; you can't even pay for services yourself
Why is health care so bad north of the border? Because there are too few doctors to treat everybody and cost savings -- which slice medical incomes -- drive doctors out of the profession. When Obama calls for a 21% cut in Medicare fees to physicians and a $2500 cut in health costs per capita, that is exactly the kind of downward spiral in medical care quality he will bring to the United States. By making too few doctors cover too many patients, he will cut the quality of care to everybody.
Answer: It's cool - we'll just chain doctors to their wards and force them to stay in America.
