Question: What is the best treatment for esophageal pain from lung cancer radiation therapy?
Answer: Agree with the above. Also:
Narcotics are frequently required as pain is severe many times.
Diflucan or nystatin (antifungal therapies) are required if secondary fungal infection.
Carafate suspension can provide some relief, as can the various miracle or magic mouthwashes.
Blessings
Question: What is the best way to cure esophageal cancer? My father is suffering from esophageal cancer. The cancer has affected a nerve near his throat causing him to lose his voice. Also, it has already metastasized to two other organs.
He has been treated with combined chemotherapy and radiation therapy for half a year, but his cancer shows no sign of shrinking and it's gradually growing.
His doctor says he cannot surgically remove the cancer because the cancer is adjacent to nerves and important organs and such an operation will damage the adjacent areas.
Isn't there any good way to cure his cancer?
Answer: As a rule, there is no cure for esophageal cancer. There is a surgical procedure that can be performed but if it has already metastasized to other organs it's probably already too advanced. Prognosis for this time of cancer is usually 5 yrs max.....but that's for strictly esophageal cancer. Depending on what other organs are involved, that time would likely be reduced.
Because it effects the esophageous, eating can become very difficult so it's important for him to take supplements like Ensure to keep his strength. Most people with esophageal cancer lose a lot of weight.
Question: Is an endoscopy necessary if a person who has esophageal cancer has been fine for 4 years? My father was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2003. The cancerous portion was removed with surgery right after diagnosis. He went through three chemical therapy immediately after the surgery (in 2003). He has been checked regularly (every 3 months during the first year and every 6 months after the first year). His voice started to become hoarse in August of 2006. He went through a month of radiation therapy from August to September (of 2006). His voice became normal starting from December. His CT test in December was fine. Recently his doctor suggested that he do an endoscopy since he hasn't done so after the surgery. My father is not very willing to do the test for two reasons:
1. he felt it is very painful during the procedure.
2 he was afraid of the endoscope might damage the esophagus somehow and do something bad.
Could anybody here give me any advice on whether an esophageal endoscopy is necessary for my father's situation and what else he should do at this stage?
Thanks

Question: Isn anyone else getting a bit fed up of the cancer research donation ads? I am as at the same time these ads are showing the news is showing Jade Goody struggling to cope with her terminal illness due to the immense pain she is experiencing.
What it has left me feeling is that even when some forms of cancer cannot be cured that once it becomes serious the medical profession cannot even control the pain either.
It doesn't relay leave me wanting to donate anything to Cancer Research.
By the way my father dies of esophageal cancer about 6 years ago. He also underwent radiotherapy and chemo therapy to no avail.
Answer: i am a 9 year cancer survivor, and i believe that the solicitations should be more specific about how much, and who receives this money. if the researchers would spend more money informing the donors, and less time panhandling on the airwaves i believe contributions would increase. i donate to the research institute that helped arrest my malignancy, and encourage others to do so!
