Heart Cancer Prevention
Question: Anybody have any tips on healthy eating and Cancer prevention.? Hey people, I'm about to ask a very long question, summarizing about my life and problems, so please bear with me.First I'll start off , I'm Ali (not real name) and i am 13 years old, i am about 5 foot 4 and a half and weigh 106, i used to weigh 116 but lost some over the summer. Unfortunately the unhealthy way.
I'll start from the beginning, I read how eating saturated/trans fats are fats that may accelerate tumor cells (cancer) growth, i also read how it may increase your risk for stroke, heart attack, and Heart disease. I got terrified, i told my mother and she told me to stop freaking out, but the problem is that all my life she cooked high fat foods, always fried, and i ate tons of cookies, cakes and unhealthy stuff. So i decided to go healthy, i tried but then it lead to me eating little and then i would binge on pizza, cereal, a lot of food, too much, way too much. The worst problem was that the past 3 years i just sat in from of the TV and computer all day, other than school, im surprised im at a healthy weight. So i continued to heat healthier and end up binging in the thing i was scared of, food, food that was advertised, food that so many people eat a day and never get sick , food i hated yet loved at the same time-bitter sweet. This continued on , and i started exercise, 20 min each day on my exercise bike but i got bored, so after about a month of so i stopped. The past time, just lately i ate normally, eating healthyish but binging sometiems on too much cereal(the whole grain kind though) instead of excersice i just stayed moving, wrestling with my brother, helping with dinner cleaning my room, ect. Unfortunatly i also went on numerous crash diets, which lead to the binges, then i would purge some, i did this for a while, so today i ate all healthy
breakfast wrap with cheese , chicken, red peppers, (lean chicken , low fat cheese, whole grain tortilla)
lunch grilled cheese sandwhich on rye bread, with low fat cheese, and broccolie, and 1 cup of OJ(natural)
carrot and NO FAT yogurt for snack
then the binge:
cereal in handfuls(whole grain though, and "crisp rice")
i ate all my parents pizza crusts and kept sneacking bites of actual pizza, i ate 1 more no fat yogurt, i ate some crackers, and drank chocolate milk..i ate a crton of raspberries, and a carton of blueberries
so as you can see my diet is strange, so very unhealthy, Now im scared that i migt develop cancer, i know that like 40 year olds eat WAAAAAY worse than me and stuff, and live, but i am so ready for a change. Tomorrow i start, keeping active and eating a lot of low fat foods, and fruits and veggies.ALl my friends dont care about their health and eat way worse than me
i read that if you eat super healthy cancer that may delelop or already is may stop and ie if you starve it(no sugar) and eat a lot of cancer killing foods..
i already did beofre kinda, and i convinced my mom to cook with olive oil from now on
so:
1.Do you think i may have started to develop cancer at 13, (and i havent eating THAT bad, before just now i have)
2. If i eat healthy, excersise and try hard, will my risk go down? If i develpoed some already will it stop?
3. Ant tips on eating well, and excersising
4. ther is no cancer history sa i know ffor my family is this a lwer risk for ,me?
5.I got my HPV shot, and my parents smoke and i smeel their smoke sometimes..what about those factors?
6. i live in a building adn ther are fumes from renovaters above us, and i stay home alot what about that?
7. So tell me everything, if you have tips and a lost on cancer killing food please tell them
but my main question is: DO you think that if i have developed cacner in me and it is growing, and i start will it die, will i be okay?? IS IT TOO LATE FOR ME TO CHANGE??WILL I BE HEALTHY?
thanks alot
1 more thing i eat aspartame in gum , is this linked to cancer
some things that come and go in me are: seeing sars i saw these for a month before and my doc. said if tehres no link to anything ill be fine, after i ate healthier and stayed more active they went away, i sometimes get a werid pain in the bakck of my head, my doc said if it comes and goes and isnt chronic i shouldnt worry
so i guiess im healthy, but i ant to be healthier. phyicaly im fine, im not fat, slim, could lose a little weight, i look pale lately becasue of my unbalanced meal, when i wake up i feel groggy and confused and weird, this happens to me everyweek wend because i go to bed late and wake up late and my sleep gets disruppted..what about that?
and do disposable water bottles give you cancer??
thanks
sorry for all of this
but
thanks.
Answer: Way too much information but cancer loves sugar, so eat less sugars or if you do, eat complex carbohydrates. Fresh vegetables and fruits are good and I read a book that cancer hates...
* citrus, cabbage, Omega 3 foods like eggs, and garlic just to name a few.
Fuel your body with the best foods that you can, if you think something is bad it probably is.
Good luck.
Question: Is heartworm prevention really safe ? Yopu hear so much about drugs & there side effects .Has there been any concerns about heartworm prevention .It has to be a poison & they want you to have your dog on it year around won't this have bad effects on your dog .I question this because our 8 yr.old wheaten died from heart cancer. We now have a pup & I am questioning alot about vaccines how safe are they really -as safe as the dogfood?
Answer: Heartworm preventative can cause reaction in some dogs just as anything can. Some dogs need a different type of preventative then others. For the most part though heartweorm preventative is safe if given correctly and in proper dosage for your dog.Heartworm prevention is much safer then the treatment for heartworms.
As for vaccinations..yearly is no longer recommended by the AAHA/AVMA or the 27 vet schools. It has been very well studied by several universities and at least one major drug company and has been determined that over vaccination is a very real problem and that vaccines are effective longer then a year. The protocol now is 3 years, however that may be changing in another year or so to be 5-7 years due to ongoing research.
It is also recommended that lepto, lyme, parainfluenza & kennel Cough (bordatella) vaccinations not be given to all dogs..only to those that are at very high risk of exposure.
It is also recommended that NO dog get vaccinated for coronavirus, adenovirus-1 or giardia.
No puppy should ever be vaccinated before they have completed their 7th week but preferably 8-9 weeks. The puppy series should NEVER be more then a series of 3 and these are done 4 weeks apart. It is also recommended that no puppy receive rabies vaccinations under 20 weeks of age and never at the same time as other vaccinations.
Question: Do you believe soon not only will camera be able take your pictures ,but also analyze your heart function? Soon cancer prevention and treatment could be aided by this technology. What if i told you it was posssible to see organ failure before it happen from a camera or camcorder.I believe the limiting factors of technology is humanities moral development and there has been very little change in the last 200 years. Like the Bible states man constanly repeats its human heritage over and over again nothing is never knew.
Answer: why not?were using camera in some operations like lap. chole. (removal of gallbladder)
Question: ? Which of the following areas of research will benefit from the human genome project? a. None of the choices are correct.
b. understanding human evolution
c. All of the choices are correct
d. understanding human embryonic development.
e. improving the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of heart disease, cancer, and other common ailments.
I did do the test and it and it said C. was wrong..
Answer: E
If A is true then C can't be true therefore C can't be true at all.
The human genome project will give you information about all the other choices so you have to pick the best one from the remaining ones.
Fragments of our evolution are encoded in our DNA, but not all of it is because our DNA doesn't determine ALL the factors that create a human, so it can't be B.
The human genome is the final product of embryonic development so it may not be D. Because once again not all the factors are included in the DNA; there are environmental, nutritional and other factors, therefore D isn't true either.
That leaves E by process of elimination. The scientist who lead the human genome project is currently working on Diabetes and why the production of insulin suddenly shuts down in the human and if that is a genetic factor. So he thinks that other common aliments can be diagnosed or at least better understood through the work of the human genome project.
I know that heart disease and cancer are all disease that do have genetic factors, which if you study the genes in the human genome you could uncover new information on them. We learned how to cure and prevent some cancers because of the human genome project and I know we have found out that some people are more prone to heart disease because of their genes so the human genome project found those answers therefore the answer has to be E.

Question: Is this right i got mail from some of my friend.? Live Life Without Limits!
AND PASS THIS EMAIL TO WHOM YOU CARE
The top five cancer-causing foods are:
1. Hot dogs
Because they are high in nitrates, the Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month. If you can't live without hot dogs, buy those made without sodium nitrate.
2.. Processed meats and bacon
Also high in the same sodium nitrates found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart disease. The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.
3. Doughnuts
Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures. Doughnuts, says Adams , may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer.
4. French fries
Like doughnuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures. They also contain cancer- causing acryl amides which occur during the frying process. They should be called cancer fries, not French fries, said Adams .
5. Chips, crackers, and cookies
All are usually made with white flour and sugar. Even the ones whose labels claim to be free of trans-fats generally contain small amounts of trans-fats.
BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS
1. No Breakfast
People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level.
This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.
2. Overeating
It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.
3. Smoking
It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.
4. High Sugar consumption
Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.
5. Air Pollution
The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.
6. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.
7. Head covered while sleeping
Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.
8. Working your brain during illness
Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.
9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts
Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.
10. Talking Rarely
Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain

The main causes of liver damage are:
1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late are main cause.
2. Not urinating in the morning.
3. Too much eating.
4. Skipping breakfast.
5. Consuming too much medication.
6. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring, and artificial sweetener.
7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As much as possible reduce cooking oil use when frying, which includes even the best cooking oils like olive oil. Do not consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit.
8. Consuming raw (overly done) foods also add to the burden of liver.
Veggies should be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts. Fried veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store.
We should prevent this without necessarily spending more. We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. Maintaining good eating habits and time condition are very important for our bodies to absorb and get rid of unnecessary chemicals according to 'schedule.'
Answer: half of that is BS

Question: Did you know there was such thing as a sitting disease? Your Body's Biggest Enemy
Learn how to ward off the nasty effects of a new epidemic: Sitting Disease
You might not want to take the following stat sitting down: According to a poll of nearly 6,300 people by the Institute for Medicine and Public Health, it's likely that you spend a stunning 56 hours a week planted like a geranium—staring at your computer screen, working the steering wheel, or collapsed in a heap in front of your high-def TV. And it turns out women may be more sedentary than men, since they tend to play fewer sports and hold less active jobs.
Even if you think you have an energetic lifestyle, sitting is how most of us spend a good part of our day. And it's killing us—literally—by way of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. All this downtime is so unhealthy that it's given birth to a new area of medical study called inactivity physiology, which explores the effects of our increasingly butt-bound, tech-driven lives, as well as a deadly new epidemic researchers have dubbed "sitting disease."
The Modern-Day Desk Sentence
"Our bodies have evolved over millions of years to do one thing: move," says James Levine,M.D., Ph.D., of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and author of Move a Little, Lose a Lot. "As human beings, we evolved to stand upright. For thousands of generations, our environment demanded nearly constant physical activity."
But thanks to technological advances, the Internet, and an increasingly longer work week, that environment has disappeared. "Electronic living has all but sapped every flicker of activity from our daily lives," Levine says. You can shop, pay bills, make a living, and with Twitter and Facebook, even catch up with friends without so much as standing up. And the consequences of all that easy living are profound.
When you sit for an extended period of time, your body starts to shut down at the metabolic level, says Marc Hamilton, Ph.D., associate professor of biomedical sciences at the University of Missouri. When muscles—especially the big ones meant for movement, like those in your legs—are immobile, your circulation slows and you burn fewer calories. Key flab-burning enzymes responsible for breaking down triglycerides (a type of fat) simply start switching off. Sit for a full day and those fat burners plummet by 50 percent, Levine says.
That's not all. The less you move, the less blood sugar your body uses; research shows that for every two hours spent on your backside per day, your chance of contracting diabetes goes up by 7 percent. Your risk for heart disease goes up, too, because enzymes that keep blood fats in check are inactive. You're also more prone to depression: With less blood flow, fewer feel-good hormones are circulating to your brain.
Spending the day on your rear is also hell on your posture and spine health, says Douglas Lentz, a certified strength and conditioning specialist and the director of fitness and wellness for Summit Health in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. "When you sit all day, your hip flexors and hamstrings shorten and tighten, while the muscles that support your spine become weak and stiff," he says. It's no wonder that the incidence of chronic lower-back pain among women has increased threefold since the early 1990s.
And even if you exercise, you're not immune. Consider this: We've become so sedentary that 30 minutes a day at the gym may not do enough to counteract the detrimental effects of eight, nine, or 10 hours of sitting, says Genevieve Healy, Ph.D., a research fellow at the Cancer Prevention Research Centre of the University of Queensland in Australia. That's one big reason so many women still struggle with weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol woes despite keeping consistent workout routines.
In a recent study, Healy and her colleagues found that regardless of how much moderate to vigorous exercise participants did, those who took more breaks from sitting throughout the day had slimmer waists, lower BMIs (body mass indexes), and healthier blood fat and blood sugar levels than those who sat the most. In an extensive study of 17,000 people, Canadian researchers drew an even more succinct conclusion: The longer you spend sitting each day, the more likely you are to die an early death—no matter how fit you are

Question: I need help with my research! please help!? I have a research that is due next week. I want to know which is the easiest to do , also where I can find the information.
Here is what I have to do:
Research one of the following lifestyle diseases:
- Heart Disease
- Cancer
- Asthma
- Injury/ poisoning
Research the lifestyle diseases risk factors/causes, prevention and support services as a brochure.
_____________________
Please help, I am not cheating or anything I just need to know where i can find the information, I am not good at researching.
Answer: Heart Disease is probably the easiest to do, as it is mostly related to lifestyle and there is a lot of research, info and publicity about it. The others are too vague and broad with the cause, effect and kind of illness.
Go to some doctor's offices to find info brochures as examples- use the phone and tell them what you need and why, they will probably put together a little pack for you so you can just pick it up. Start with the wikipedia link below... great place to start whenever you have research to do.

WASHINGTON - The influenza vaccine given to Americans may not protect as well as expected, U.S. health officials said on Friday as the number of flu cases increased nationwide.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said slightly more than half of the influenza virus strains reported to its surveillance system are not good matches against the strains included in this flu season’s vaccine.
The number of states reporting widespread flu activity jumped to 31 this week compared with 11 a week ago, the CDC said. But Dr. Joe Bresee of the CDC’s influenza division said there are no indications this flu season is worse than usual.

“Seasonal flu activity was slow to start this year but has increased sharply in recent weeks,” Bresee told reporters.
One measure officials use to gauge the severity of the season is the number of flu-related child deaths. Bresee said the CDC has heard of six U.S. children who have died from the flu, a relatively low number compared with recent years.
Flu viruses mutate and change all the time, so every year a different vaccine is created as officials predict which particular strains will circulate.
The vaccine is designed to protect against three influenza strains — two from Type A, an H1N1 and an H3N2 version, and one for Type B.
Bresee said about 30 percent of the overall strains of influenza in the United States may be a Type A strain that emerged in Australia called H3N2 A/Brisbane. It emerged too late to be included in the flu vaccine offered in the United States beginning in September and October.
The Type B strain chosen for this year’s vaccine also was not a good match for most of the B virus strains seen in the United States this flu season, Bresee said.
“While a less-than-ideal virus match between the viruses in the vaccine and those circulating viruses can reduce vaccine effectiveness, we know from past influenza studies that the vaccine can still protect enough to make illness milder or prevent flu-related complications,” Bresee said.

Under-the-tongue vaccine could help lick the flu
Bresee noted that decisions on the composition of the annual vaccine are made about nine months before it is made available to the public in the fall, and it is sometimes hard to know that far in advance which strains will circulate.
Flu vaccines take months to make.
Bresee also said some resistance is being reported to the antiviral drug Tamiflu, made by Switzerland’s Roche Holding AG and Gilead Sciences Inc of the United States. Of the viruses tested in CDC flu labs, 4.5 percent are resistant to the drug, Bresee said.
Influenza kills an estimated 36,000 Americans in an average year, and puts 200,000 into the hospital, the CDC said.

Question: PLEASE CRITIQUE - CORNELL UNIV ESSAY!? *College of Arts and Sciences:
Describe your intellectual interests, their evolution, and what makes them exciting to you. Tell us how you will utilize the academic programs in the College of Arts and Sciences to further explore your interests, intended major, or field of study.
I have developed an interest in the sciences through my courses and activities during high school. Specifically, I found biology to be engaging, because of its potential to change and improve the quality of people's lives. My AP Biology course and my involvement in the Annenberg Science Symposium were especially important in immersing me into the field of science.
My passion for biology began when I took AP Biology. Having the opportunity to learn about the organization and intricate functions of the human body initially sparked my interest in biology. For example, as I learned about the circulatory system, I became intrigued by the systematic, yet complex, mechanics of the heart. As the course became more detailed and complicated, my interest in the elaborate organ systems grew. During this time, my growing appreciation for the various organ systems allowed me to develop interests in other aspects of biology.
While my interest in biology began in class, I was able to form a more comprehensive and practical view of the field through the Annenberg Science Symposium. The Annenberg Science Symposium is an interscholastic organization, in which students research medical innovations and conduct a presentation for the staff at local hospitals. The symposium gave me the opportunity to work with experts to research bioterrorism prevention, cancer treatment with nano-particles, RNA-based therapeutics, and neurostimulation. The in-depth study of cutting-edge advances exposed me to the real-life applications of science. Annenberg also gave me the opportunity to view a live surgery. I researched the specific surgical procedure and was able to discuss it with the surgeon during the surgery. I was in awe as I witnessed the application of biology in improving lives. These experiences propel me to further pursue my interest in biology in college.
Cornell's biology program will give me the resources to continue my pursuit of biology. The abundant research opportunities will provide me with more avenues to explore the diversity of the field. Cornell's dedication to the bio-revolution will offer a unique community, in which I will be able to expand my own interests. The biology program will also give me the opportunity to understand and engage in the current biological advances in the international scientific community. I have no doubt that the students and faculty at Cornell will promote my growth as a distinct individual and scientist.
Please critique! And also do you guys think it is too short??
If so, can you please add something.... ANYTHING at all!
I really have NO idea what else to add.
I tried to keep it nice and short... but not rushed.
Thank you guys in advance!
Answer: Ok, I'm not an Admissions expert, but I do think it contains a lot of technical terms, especially in the third paragraph, which kinda takes away the fun outta reading admissions essays. Hmmm, perhaps you should make it more simpler?
