Question: A family member has liver cancer & anyone know about this .....? My father has malignant liver cancer and it has spread to the small & large intestines. At first I had heard it was a spot and now I hear it has spread since the test. My sister said he is going to fight it and will be going to the cancer center. See he cannot be operated on because he had a triple bypass not long ago. So why is it that if they had that they cannot have surgery for cancer, liver cancer? Also because she said he would try to fight it, I would too, and I hope he does, but then I hear from someone else....a very reliable person, that it will be only a month or 2 and he will be gone. He does not look that sick. I am so upset, I have not slept good for several days now worse than usual, because I think about him being so sick with this. I am so confused of who and what to believe. Answer: first of all..im sorry to hear about it... im sure its hard on everyone in the family. liver cancer (hepatoma) if confined to a particular lobe of the liver.. MAY be removed surgically. but as u mentioned.. if the patient has had recent heart surgery.. a bypass in particular.. the benefits of undergoing the surgery do not outweigh the added risks of performing it. meaning that.. he is at risk of decreased survival more so because of the surgery than without it. performing surgery on a patient with heart disease is avoided because it causes increased stress on the heart... but that depends on the integrity of his heart right now... HOWEVER.. your father can ask his doctor the reason why not... is he not stable enough for an operation.. or is it that the tumor is inoperable... 2 different reasons...find out why. usually.. where the cancer has spread to other organs.. it is no longer in one place where it can be easily removed... once it has spread...surgery is not the best option for his management. Instead chemotherapy and raditaion would benefit him more... so including both the reasons of tumor spread (metastasis) and the history of previous cardiac surgery.... the best thing wud be to do radio/chemo... remember that every moment is precious... so a happy environment is always welcome! as hard as it is... you have to be strong.. for your father.

Answer: I am sorry to say she probably has a poor prognosis. If she wants chemo it may buy her a little more time, but she will likely be very sick and weak from it. Many people her age decide to forget the chemo and live their last weeks spending as much time as they can with family and friends. Hospice is a wonderfull option and focused on keeping them comfortable. In all the 12 yrs I have been a nurse I never had a family or patient tell me they regretted going to hospice when the time was right. If she is coherant and alert ask her to think about what she wants. It is her decision to make. Best wishes to her and you guys.

Now, I'm going to make clear that I haven't gotten any diagnosis of anything and I had an X-ray revealing no bowel obstruction, bone or other dense tumor. That being said, I have been having a lot of abdominal issues for the past few months, such as abdominal pain (which was severe a while ago but has recently been not quite as bad since I've lowered my stress levels), occasional low fevers, very occasional blood in the stool (usually this happens only with diarrhea, but sometimes on a fully formed stool), and other things such as mild nausea, heartburn, and I'll occasionally get sores on my lips and a little arthritis. Today when I woke up I noticed a pressure-like pain under my rib cage on my right side. In the beginning the pain was in my back but as time went on it became more and more of an issue in my front side. I went to the health center at my university and they found no evidence of an enlarged liver when the palpated me nor did they find anything abnormal when they percussed it. This made me feel slightly better, but then I found out that I had a fever of 99.6. Also, I took 2 ibuprofen and am currently wearing a heatpad, neither of which has done much to get rid of the irritation. My appetite has been stunted for the day, but I'm also very stressed out, so that may have something to do with it. Either way, I did force myself to eat and nothing made me nauseous or made me vomit. I don't think I have any other liver mets. symptoms other than the dull pain (i.e. no jaundice or hepatomegaly) but I've heard that cancer that spreads effects everyone differently and may even be asymptomatic. Btw, I'm 18 years old with no family history of any specific cancer, but my mothers side has a variety of bowel issues such as Crohn's disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Does this sound like liver metastasis? As I've said, I have had arthritis in my knees, fingers, and shoulders, but this pain under the rib cage only began today and got worse fast. Could some sort of benign condition be causing all this? I am seeing a specialist soon, but I need input before then so I can maybe sleep tonight...

Answer: No. I do not pay attention to what politicians say, but rather look at what they have done. Since Obama has no track record, that is hard to do. However, he ran in Illinois for the state senate, on a platform of lowering taxes. Once in, he voted every single time to raise taxes. Since he has been in the US senate, he has voted 95 times to raise taxes. He never voted to lower them. Now, he has said that he wants to give the middle class a break and tax everyone who makes over 250 thousand a year. That was a couple of days ago. Yesterday he changed that saying that he wanted to tax everyone making over 200 thousand a year. Today Biden said that they plan on taxing everyone making over 200 a year. Well, since he has repeatedly voted to raise taxes on someone making 42,000 and above, I think that is the closest to the truth. Plus, he plans on taxing your inheritance, 48 percent across the board. Plus, he is eliminating the 500,000 tax exclusion for the first 500,000 that one makes on the sale of their house. Instead of taxing the remainder that you have made out at 15 percent, he plans on raising that to 28 percent. Yet, the law has it capped at 25 percent. Obama is the Tax Master and he will tax your sneezes if he knows about them. I agree with you on his socialized medicine. I much prefer a 5,000 tax credit given back to my family. These places will charge more, pay Doctors more, and have the latest advances in equipment. These clinics will attract the smartest and most talented doctors and surgeons from our “free� hospitals. If you have Government insurance, you will never see them. Yes, there are problems with our medical system, but in an emergency you will be seen and treated properly with or without a nickel in your pocket. You will be expected to pay, but why shouldn’t you? More to the point, why should I pay for you? Socialized medicine will give you’re a free liver transplant or cancer treatment, if you live long enough while waiting your turn. That would require the authoring of a web based software package in many different versions that would speak to the many different disciplines in the medical field so as not to share or needlessly replicate sensitive medical information. Most Americans are afraid to shop online and now we are going to ask them to supply all their personal information to a Government run database with literally 10’s of thousands of user names and passwords distributed throughout the medical community? Answer: You paint a rosy picture of a health care system that fails millions of Americans and attack the things that have been done to improve it. I am glad you are satisfied with the status quo but I am not. There are significant challenges in reforming the medical system, but they have to be faced and at least Obama is actually talking about fixing them - not simply advocating MORE deregulation like McCain. The free market approach we have taken to health care has caused costs to soar and there needs to be a new way. As to your question - people are voting for Obama because of both.
