Question: cancer prevention or treatment? could cancer be treated or prevented by inserting an inactive cell of a scecific type of cancer eg lung cancer to prevent the future formation of it? just a theory please correctif wrong
Answer: You are referring to a vaccine of sorts against cancer. Unfortunately, based on our current understanding of cancer this is not possible.
The modus operandi of our immune system is to seperate all cells into "self" and "non-self". So our immune system will recognise bacterial cells as "non-self" and mount an immune response against them.
Cancer cells however are derived from one's own cells- to our immune system they generally look identical to "self", and therefore no immune response is mounted.
Immunisation presents another problem. Given that every cancer originates from our own cells, any vaccine would also have to be derived from one's own cells. Furthermore, the nature of cancer is that a cell starts off normal, and acquires damage. More and more damage over time leaves a cell that just doesn't know its role anymore, and that doesn't know when to stop growing. Although there are several points in a cell's genome that are more likely to be the site of damage, there is no one genetic characteristic for all cancers, therefore not only would every vaccine have to be tailor made, but a vaccine would have to be made for every subtype of cancer- and there are thousands!
There are however, vaccines against the cause of cancer. One such vaccine is the new HPV vaccine for cervical cancer. In this case, it has been found that Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is responsible for over 98% of cervical cancers. In particular, two subtypes of HPV, 16 and 18, are responsible for approximately 70% of cancers. This virus chronically infects the cells of the cervix and the immune system often is not able to clear the infection, or by the time it does, it is too late.
The virus integrates its own DNA into the cervical cell's DNA, leaving behind stretches of DNA that tell the cell to replicate unchecked. This optimises the conditions for cancer. So the new vaccine teaches the immune system how to combat HPV 16 and 18 infections BEFORE women are ever infected, therefore the viral DNA is not integrated into the host DNA, thereby preventing cervical cancer.
You had a good idea, and at the end of the day it wasn't the answer! But we need people like you to continue learning and asking questions- one day you might just come up with the right answer! Hope that helps!

5.prev. Don't smoke, stay away from people who do.
Question: Lung Cancer. What are the....? Well im researching lung cancer for homework and I need to know the symptoms, the treatment (if there is any of course). Also Is there any like.... prevention or immunization programs? Im stuck and Im researching and all I find is mindless scientific talk...
Answer: I think this Mayo Clinic review is fairly intelligible without so much mindless scientific talk. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/lung-cancer/DS00038
Prevention is relatively simple. All we need to do to prevent ~90% of lung cancers is not smoke tobacco. We bring this disease on ourselves, and lung cancers from cigarette smoking account for over 31% of ALL cancer deaths in the USA. There is no immunization for lung cancers. It is all dependent on smoking. I saw hundreds of lung cancer patients in my 20 years as a cancer specialist doctor. Almost every one had been a chronic cigarette smoker. My average patients had smoked ~half a million cigarettes before their lung cancer diagnoses.
By the way, if a person already has symptoms from a primary lung cancer, the chances are it is already too late. We only cure 1 in 7 people diagnosed with lung cancer in the U.S., and those are cured with surgery - not with chemotherapy. We don't even do well when they are diagnosed in the asymptomatic stage. It is FAR better to prevent lung cancers by not smoking. Lung cancers kill more people each year than the next three cancer killers combined (Breast, Prostate, and Colon cancers).
Actually, the scientific talk does make sense if you have studied this for about 13 years to become a cancer specialist, but I can see why it would seem nonsensical if you are in high school.
Question: Lung cancer- Homework Help? Well im researching lung cancer for homework and I need to know the symptoms, the treatment (if there is any of course). Also Is there any like.... prevention or immunization programs? Im stuck and Im researching and all I find is mindless scientific talk...

Question: 8th Grade Science Fair Question...HELP!? 10 points for best answer. Thanks!? I am trying to decide on the topics for my 8th grade science fair project. Two of the topics i am interested in are "Effect of Nicotine in Causing/Spreading Lung Cancer" and "Prevention of Cancer by eating Right Vegetables And Fruits". As my Science Fair project HAS to include a Hypothesis and an actual Experiment -- meaning it cannot be a research study, can anyone suggest any experiments that I can do at home for the above two topics to be able to prove a hypothesis correct or incorrect?
Nothing TOO hard, because im only in 8th grade!
thankss!
Answer: It may be hard testing either, since you probably don't have a ready supply of cancer cells, human testing has to go before the IRB and you're too young to buy cigarettes.
If you aren't looking for something hard, I'd suggest a topic change.
Question: I have a health studies assignment focusing on Australia's national health priority areas AND? the question is: propose a campaign of your own which would assist in the prevention of your chosen major cause of morbidity and mortality. Identify it's strengths and weaknesses.
I'm doing lung cancer, and i'm stuck for original ideas, anyone got any?
thanks :)
Answer: In Australia, the best thing to do to reduce mortality would be to scrap the entire healthcare system and start from scratch with a privately run system.
Question: Cure for Cancer: No profit means no interest in it ? Cure for cancer: No profit means no interest in it ?
I am somewhat surprised that a research scientest at the University of Alberta believes he will have problems with research money into a simple cancer treatment; because there is not profit in it, it is not a patenable drug.
January 16, 2007 - Edmonton - DCA is an odourless, colourless, inexpensive, relatively non-toxic, small molecule. And researchers at the University of Alberta believe it may soon be used as an effective treatment for many forms of cancer.
Dr. Evangelos Michelakis, professor U of A Department of Medicine, has shown that dichloroacetate (DCA) causes regression in several cancers, including lung, breast and brain tumors.
So do you think the fact that profits cannot be made in a cure, (prevention is the best of cures) renders much of the research money into expensive pharamceutical drugs and treatments that are not the best ?
CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation)
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/edmonton/
This is why we should try to eliminate the profit motive in disease treatment.
The healthier we are the more we can spend on GMC, Ford and Chrysler products.
Like I have said before, in Italy doctors receive a flat fee per patient per year, so they are motivated to keep you healthy and out of their offices.
Cure for cancer....maybe garlic is too simple ?
Answer: Please do more investigation into the University of Alberta concerning this hype. All their research is already patented to a company called CardioMetabolics Inc They have exclusive rights to market DCA drugs for cancer:
http://www.cnw.ca/fr/releases/archive/January2007/23/c8535.html
Please also note that there is more hype than hope going on presently about this drug. My son has a stage IV abdominal sarcoma . . don't you think that we who are suffering have more at stake than the rest of you who are just playing political games.
Let this DCA go through the Clinical Trials, if it works on even one type of cancer . . than good . . but I doubt that it will cover the over 200 types of cancers, the stages and grades, and be suitable for all ages and people who are currently suffering from cancer.
And, if any of you have any compassion, please read what the American Cancer Society says about this hyped up product:
DCA: Cancer Breakthrough Or Urban Legend?
http://www.cancer.org/aspx/blog/Comments.aspx?id=130
Incidentally, this is just one in a long parade of . . . new cancer 'cures' . . . that have yet to undergo human Clinical Trials. The Koreans have also developed what they call 'a cancer killing virus' . . . which probably holds more promise than this:
SKorean scientists say cancer-killing virus developed

Question: Why do people start smoking cigarettes? They know it's not gonna end well!? Their breath is gonna smell, their teeth are gonna turn yellow, nobody's gonna wanna kiss them, nobody wants to be around the smoke, it's not cool whatsoever, not to mention the damage to lungs and risk of cancer. So why even start in the first place?? Is all of that really worth the quick prevention of stress? Doubt it!
Answer: I started smoking because I thought it was cool, I was in junior high, so I didn't know the difference.
but, from the smokers point of view, it's a stress reliever, coping mechanism, good way to get a break in at work, habit, sometimes it tastes good, and it soothes your nerves.
it is nasty though, I quit smoking about 2 months ago.
Question: charcoal radon in my home 10.9 pCi/L .Need help about what to do? i just had a radon test of my basement, the result was 10.9 picoCurie per liter. and i saw a chart that looks like this (below) so i have to fix my home but how?
Radon Risk If You've Never Smoked
Radon Level If 1,000 people who never smoked were exposed to this level over a lifetime*... The risk of cancer from radon exposure compares to**... WHAT TO DO:
20 pCi/L About 36 people could get lung cancer 35 times the risk of drowning Fix your home
10 pCi/L About 18 people could get lung cancer 20 times the risk of dying in a home fire Fix your home
8 pCi/L About 15 people could get lung cancer 4 times the risk of dying in a fall Fix your home
4 pCi/L About 7 people could get lung cancer The risk of dying in a car crash Fix your home
2 pCi/L About 4 person could get lung cancer The risk of dying from poison Consider fixing between 2 and 4 pCi/L
1.3 pCi/L About 2 people could get lung cancer (Average indoor radon level) (Reducing radon levels below
2 pCi/L is difficult.)
0.4 pCi/L (Average outdoor radon level)
Note: If you are a former smoker, your risk may be higher.
* Lifetime risk of lung cancer deaths from EPA Assessment of Risks from Radon in Homes (EPA 402-R-03-003).
** Comparison data calculated using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 1999-2001 National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Reports.
Answer: An Active Soil Depressurization system is the most common method.
The basic procedure is to...
* Insert a pipe into the floor of the basement. With a dirt crawlspace, the area is sealed with a special plastic membrane and suction applied beneath it.
* Find a neat way to run this pipe to the roof.
* Install a fan outside of the living space of the house to draw air from under the house. The garage or attic is a great location.
* Sump pump basins need to be sealed.
* Seal all cracks, holes in the floor and walls to inhibit the loss of conditioned air from the home.
* A warning device is installed to let you know if the fan has failed.
* System labels will be placed on each level of the home.
* Perform a back draft assessment of the homes combustion type appliances to assure that no CO gas spillage can occur.
* When a radon repair is completed the contractor will provide you with a short-term test kit to verify the results of the radon mitigation.
There are some other ways to mitigate radon but with a summer reading of 10.9pCi/L, they probably will not get your level below 4pCi/L.
Question: Help!! Hurry !! Can anyone correct the two paragraphs? I am a Chinese student. I will take a English exam tomorrow, but my teacher can not help me to correct the final four paragraphs . Can anynoe help me? (just 150-180 words per paragraphs) Thanks a lot
3)smoking
During this decade, cancer is always the first cause of death and lung cancer is the first of most prevalence cancer in the world. Many medical researches had proved that smoking is the major cause of lung cancer. According to statistics data, there are 80% lung cancer patient are smokers. The more serious is that over 85% patient of a major subtype of lung cancer, adenocarcinoma, are non-smoking females. Exception of kitchen smoke, the second-hand smoking is the major cause of lung cancer. According to the World Health Organization non-smoking environments and high tobacco prices are two most effective measures to reduce tobacco consumption and smoking among young people. A 1999 World Band report stated that when the price of tobacco is raised by 10 percent, consumption decrease by 4 to 8 percent. Because of this, the U.S., such as Mayor Bloomberg and Bill Gates will work together on a $500 million campaign to stop smoking in Asia and Afica.
The new tobacco Hazard Prevention Act amendment takes effect in Taiwan on January 11, 2009. Smoking will be banned in many indoor such as KTV, Bowling alley, cyber cafe, passenger waiting room. Train station platform, though an outdoor area, was included in the ban for being a part of the train station. Smoking indoor working areas with over three people is also banned. Once being reported, violators can be fined NT$2000 to NT$10000. Owners who do not put up signs will be fined NT$10000 to NT$50000. A no –smoking sign should be put up at the entrance of every smoke free place. The anit-smoking foundation spokesman, Suan Yuao, said it is difficult to promote the smoking free environment in Taiwan. With the new tobacco hazard prevention act take effect in Taiwan, we hope that the number of smokers and the amount of tobacco consumption will decrease to make a smoke-free environment.
(4)Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year and spring festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is also the most special holiday different from western countries. According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nian. People used firecracks to frighten the Nian and from then on , the Nian never came to village again.
The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month in Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th. On the day before the new year my family always give our home a through cleaning to sweep away the bad luck of last year. At the eve of Chinese New Year, my uncle’s family, aunt’s family and my family will eat dinner including fish and new year cake together in my home to celebrate the coming of New Year. The first day of the new year, my brother and I will get the red packets containing cash from my parents and we always buy the firecrackers and set off these in the park. During the second day of the new year, my family always go to my grandmother’s home and eat lunch with her.

Question: can you proof read my essay and tell me what you think and if theres any punctuation i need to correct? The Effects of a Mindfulness Manipulation on Adolescent Smoking
Isn’t smoking great? It’s not like cigarettes kill so many people a year and it’s not like
“second hand smoke” even harms non-smokers. Right, Wrong Smoking can cause trouble, Tobacco smoke is a human killer, and even if you don’t smoke you can be in harm.
Evidence suggests that smoking cigarettes increases the likelihood of suffering from heart disease, emphysema, lung cancer, high blood pressure, and premature aging. The smoker is also at risk of many short-term health consequences such as chronic cough, yellow teeth, and unpleasant breath. The American Cancer Society estimates that cigarettes are responsible for about 431,000 deaths in the United States each year. Lung cancer accounts for about 30 percent of all cancer deaths in the United States, and smoking accounts for nearly 90 percent of lung cancer deaths. The smoking habit and addiction to nicotine usually begin at an early age. In the United States, more than 70 percent of adults who smoke began smoking before the age of 18. This fact has led to particular concern over smoking in teenagers and young adults.
Tobacco industries direct 90% of recommendation their cigarette advertisements toward today's youth, hoping to hook another young adolescent into their money making scheme. Onset of smoking in children occurs at an early age due to a number of factors that include pro-social smoking advertisements, peer and even parents in certain circumstances. Primary prevention techniques that attempt to stop the behavior before it starts are effective because children are still young enough to be molded and influenced accordingly by the proper role-models.
Preventative measures, such as informational campaigns are ineffective because they are unrealistic and fail to emphasize on the here and now. These measures focus on the future health risks that may occur 20 or 30 years down the line, which is much to long for a twelve-year-old to concern himself about. Adolescents also believe that they are invincible and therefore not subject to the health risks of all other smokers. For a young adolescent, life is still novel and carefree. The health risks of smoking are not part of a twelve-year-olds mindset-at least not until he or she is grandpa's age.
A common habit difficult to resist when tempted. Fear manipulations lack preventative power because many of the health risks of smoking are long term, for a young teenager-what out of sight is out of mind. Fear manipulations are unrealistic simply because of the waiting period before the onset of disease.
Early teens spend most of their time with peers, rather than parents. Mom and Dad play more of a secondary role during the teen years. It makes sense that young teens are easily persuaded by their peer group simply because the greater part of the day is spent interacting with them. Parents do not become the active roll model until dinner time for a few hours until lights out. If a youngster believes that smoking is common and normal, he or she may say if everyone else does it, so will I.
Approximately 7 million tons of commercial tobaccos are grown each year, with a value of $39 billion. Leading tobacco-growing countries are China, the United States, India, Brazil, Turkey, and Zimbabwe. Tobacco is an economically important crop for many nations—about 2 million tons of unmanufactured tobacco leaves, at a value of about $6,500 per ton, are exported each year worldwide. Brazil leads in exports, with about 15 percent of the total, followed closely by the United States, with about 11 percent of the total. The United States exports the most cigarettes and other manufactured tobacco products. Of the approximately 635 billion cigarettes made in the United States in 1999, about one-fourth were exported.
Despite all this there may still be faith for some who want to quit. Studies of ex-smokers show that their risk of dying from smoking-related disease decreases with each year of abstinence. Smokers who quit before the age of 50 reduce their risk of life-threatening disease by half compared with those who continue smoking. Since the surgeon general’s report in 1964, the proportion of males who smoke has decreased from more than 50 percent to about 28 percent while the percentage of women who smoke has fallen from about 34 percent to 23 percent. Today, about 44 million Americans have quit smoking cigarettes.
The question to be addressed is what can be done to motivate healthy behavior. Hypocrisy manipulations have been used in the past to decrease the frequency of unwanted behaviors. Hypocrisy manipulations promote behavior change because they motivate a person to think about their inconsistencies.
In light of the disease risks associated with tobacco products and their associated high health-care costs, many individuals and health organizations have lobbied for public policy changes that would change the way tobacco products are regulated, manufactured, marketed, and sold in the United States. In November 1998 the tobacco industry and the attorneys general of 46 states, along with representatives of the public health field and lawyers representing smokers, announced an agreement that bans outdoor cigarette advertising and the use of cartoon characters in advertising, a practice that may attract young people to smoking. The agreement also requires tobacco companies to pay $206 billion during the next 25 years to fund antismoking public education programs, smoking cessation programs, tobacco-related medical research, and reimbursement to states for some of the health-care costs associated with treating smokers.
Last but not least finally, in late 1999 Philip Morris, the nation’s largest cigarette maker, publicly acknowledged that smoking is addictive and causes serious health problems.
Answer: ''Tobacco industries direct 90% of recommendation their cigarette advertisements toward today's youth,'' This doesn't really make alot of sense, and ''Last but not least finally,'' should say ''Last but not least, finally''. (I moved the comma) Other than that this essay is really good!!!
Question: Second Hand Smoke and Pets - important information DO NOT REPORT? Someone reported my question and had it deleted, I posted it for people that actually care about their pets health.
I know it's not a question but there are people who may be interested in this article. Some people may find it interesting.
Health officials often talk about the dangers of living with a smoker, but few pet parents are aware that our animal companions face similar risks—from respiratory problems to cancer—when exposed to secondhand smoke. New research suggests that secondhand smoke is unsafe at all levels—for humans and pets—so it's time to get serious about ditching those butts for good.
One recent study shows that nearly 30 percent of pets live with at least one smoker. This is a grave concern, according to Dr. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, Medical Director of the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center, since secondhand smoke can damage the nervous systems of both cats and dogs.
"Tobacco smoke has been shown to contain numerous cancer-causing compounds, making it hazardous for animals as well as humans," says Dr. Gwaltney-Brant. "Exposure to secondhand smoke can cause many of the same harmful inflammatory changes in the airways and lungs of dogs as their human counterparts."
Cats who live with smokers are prone to developing malignant lymphoma, perhaps as a result of ingesting carcinogenic residue when it settles on their fur. Kitty's canine counterparts are especially vulnerable to secondhand smoke's respiratory effects, and can develop life-threatening nasal and lung cancers.
Nicotine—found in cigarettes and other tobacco products—is also highly toxic to animals if ingested. A dog who accidentally eats tobacco may develop weakness, muscle twitching, decreased breathing rate, and finally collapse, coma and possibly death. The ASPCA strongly recommends keeping your pet away from tobacco as well as secondhand smoke.
In honor of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month this April, why not resolve to avoid smoking around your pet? Smoke outside and preserve the lungs of your two- and four-legged family members. Or better yet, toss those cigarettes in the trash—your pet will thank you! For more information about protecting the health of your furry friend, please visit the ASPCA’s Guide to Pet Care.
cassie_331 - I have already said that this is not a question, it's just some information that some people may not have known before.
I should have known I'd get all negative answers, I am not trying to get anyone to change just to be more aware of it.
Answer: I commend you for attempting to enlighten the public. I agree that most people *don't* think about the harmful effects their smoking may have on animals. It's the same for children! It's like if the person/animal can't/doesn't argue, then it must not mind the smoke. And this is coming from an ex-smoker! I smoked for almost 10 years in close proximity to my animals and even my little brother and sister. And you know I never thought twice about it. But now that I've been smoke-free for 3 years, I notice how wrong it is for us to smoke around our pets.
Thank you for posting this for everyone to see!
