Melanoma Cancer Research
Question: Write a persuasive essay why melanoma should be funded.WE have to fund cancer research.Tell intro,3 paragraphs? and last paragraph
Answer: Will give you a heads up for your paper.
Funding should be provided because Melanoma is the one cancer that is massively spread when it returns ie. leg lesion diagnosis Melanoma Stage and Breslow level removed margins clear returns in 6 months person died in1 week
Question: Would you rather spend $335 million researching CANCER or Preventing STDs? Obama's stimulus bill spends $400 million to research Global Warming and $335 million to prevent STDs. It appropriates **ZERO** dollars for cancer research
Is Herpes worse than Colon Cancer? Is a canker sore worse than melanoma?
IS THIS CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE, or simply PORK we can believe in??
Answer: So spending all that money on stopping kids getting chlamydia from nights of drunken orgies is more important than people who might die?
People that get STDs know the risks, people aren't stupid.
Cancer is 100000000000x more important than STDs.
Let little jimmy have a sore crotch for a few days until he can go to the doctor and buy some cream for it.
Question: If you have had cancer, do you blame it on one specific act or a specific exposure to the environment? I am currently dealing with reoccuring melanoma. I ask this because the more research I have done, the more I realize no one truly understands how cancer is caused. But those that never had cancer, are always quick to find the blame on something.
Joanne, most of the research I have found questions the effectivness of sun screen to prevent melanoma. I am why do blacks get melanoma under their finger nails and toe nails?.
Answer: I so agree with you!
No I don't blame my cancer on anything I did, ate, breathed in,or anything else.
It's far less frightening for many people who haven't had cancer to blame the victim than to accept that cancer is a largely random disease that can strike anyone at any time.
Nobody knows what causes cancer; the people who post theories on here about lifestyle factors - diet, lack of exercise, stress, cosmetic use etc - are invariably people who haven't had cancer.
Excellent question!
Question: i need an extra two minutes on my speech about melanoma? can someone read it and help me add anything? Slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat. Says Sid the cancer council seagull. Although this slogan is commonly used across our nation every summer, There is not enough education about sun safety through out our schools.
Melanoma is a form of skin cancer. The most deadliest and rapid moving cancer of them all. The first sign of melanoma is usually a new spot or an existing mole or freckle that changes in appearance.
Some of the changes might be that the spot may grow larger. The edges of the spot may look irregular rather than smooth. The spot may be mottled with a range of colours such as brown, black, blue, red, white or light grey. The spot may be itchy or may bleed.
It's recommended that you go straight to the doctors when you notice the signs, every few months especially the warmer ones you should get all your moles and freckles checked just to be on the safe side.
People with fair skin are at higher risk of developing melanoma than those with darker skin. but it is no substitute for sunscreen and adequate protective clothing. During the summer, a long sleeve top, A wide brim hat, Spf 15+ sunscreen, and protective sunglasses are suitable during the scorching summer temperatures.
“Between 11 and 3, stay under a tree, the best sunscreen of all is absolutely free.” This statement is not true, because even during the coldest times of the year, you can still get sun burnt. And not only that, UV Rays are not the only thing that causes cancer, Tanning booths and Pollution can trigger melanomas.
Although there are several causes of cancer, There are also many many myths about cancer. I’m sure a majority of you have heard that putting your mobile phone down your shirt or under your pillow of a night, causes cancer. Not true, I can assure you of that.
Standing too close to your microwave while it’s cooking food causes cancer, Again, Rubbish, The only way you could possibly get cancer from your microwave is if the seal broke around it and radiation leaked out from it. Myth number 3).
Household bug sprays cause cancer, Sleeping with an underwire bra causes cancer, Photocopying a body part causes cancer, applying sunscreen once a day will keep you safe from UV rays, You can’t get burnt when you’re in the snow. Not one of these statements are true.
I recently had a personal experience with melanoma, I watched my friend go through a grueling death. Which only took 6 weeks from diagnosis to kill her. I buried a friend of 15 years in which melanoma was discovered in her left arm, and with many so called “successful operations” she was deemed clear of the disease but only one month later, the melanoma had shot up into her liver, which had rapidly caused her demise.
Painfully killing her within 6 weeks. It was an awful experience to witness, The lady was in significant pain which could only be controlled by morphine. The tumor on her liver was so massive that it looked like she was having twins, but the rest of her body had withered away.
Leaving the image of a prisoner of war. I can’t believe how aggressive this disease is. No amount of pain killers could stop her pain. And the amazing down hill fall in 2 days was astonishing. She couldn’t eat, Couldn’t sleep.
Couldn’t walk, She was so weak that she was in and out of conscience Her mouth was so dehydrated, her lips were cracked, and her tongue looked like an 100 year old cockatoo’s tongue.
Cancer research has come such a long way in the past 2 decades. When you were diagnosed with cancer back then, It was almost like a death sentence. But now with cancer research and treatments, such as radiology and chemotherapy and certain medications, a lot can be cured it’s just when it reaches the vital organs, ie. Liver, lungs, bowel, the survival rate drops dramatically,
A lot of people these days who have passed on from cancer, their families request that donations to the cancer council are made in lieu of flowers, so more money can be put in to research. Instead of money being wasted on flowers and dying like their loved ones.
The remarkable thing about this is that she had been to the doctors about a suspicious lump in her arm attached to a freckle. This went undiagnosed. So to anyone out there, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion, or 3rd if you are unsatisfied. If you have any enquiries call the cancer council now, 13 11 20. This is dedicated to my friend Anne Wesner, rest in peace.

I'm 15. Is there anything at all i should add?
give me some lines, or paraghraphs or sentences that i should add to it.
Anythign thankyou!
Thankyou, last answerer.
Yes i know there are many eling errors, but it's only because I haven't edited yet, and yes I had planned to practice outloud haha
should I add this too?
There are many different cancer fundraisers, for different kinds of cancers.
World Cancer Day is marked on February 4th to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment.
Jeans for Genes is a major fundraiser of the Children's Medical Research Institute.
This includes Jeans for Genes Day, events, exhibitions and other FUNdraising events throughout the year.
Daffodil Day is the largest fundraising event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and the day of the year we invite all Australians to unite and lend their support to the fight against cancer.
The money raised will help the Cancer Council to fund essential services, education and research programs, making a difference to lives of people with cancer today, and helping to protect lives tomorrow?
Answer: Can you use visuals, like a PowerPoint to accompany your speech. If so, not only could you actually show what everyone should look for, but it would also slow you down by at least 2 minutes.
Also, if you wrote this speech on your own, for 15, you are an amazing writer. Run it thru spell check, there are just a few minor type-o's. Seriously, I've seen many speeches in my college classes and most are not as well written as yours.
Also, practice your speech outloud at home before you give it to your class. This really helped me (even though I felt like a dork). It got me over being nervous.
Question: Any opinions on Arthur G James Cancer Hospital and Richard J Solove Research Institute in Columbus, OH? My son has Melanoma Skin Caner. He has been treated with Chemo for the past 6 weeks. The chemo is no working and and the cancer has now spread to the spleen. I have heard of a cancer institution in Columbus, Ohio, but i don't know the name. Is it Arthur G James Cancer Hospital? and how good is it? If not, what is the name?
Deeply saddened
Answer: I don't have any personal experience with Arthur G James Cancer Hospital. However, it is one of NCIs Comprehensive Cancer Centers. There are only 39 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the USA.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comprehensive_Cancer_Center
These are the best of the best. They have comprehensive facilities and are involved in state of the art research.
I'm sorry to hear about your son. Advanced melanoma is very difficult to treat. There has been some success with vaccines against melanoma. You may want to check into it.

Keep in mind, i'm 15. anything i should add? please answer
nah, she was 50. my mum knew her for 18 years. so i knew her my whole life
Answer: i'm a two time AML Leukemia survivor. You have my stamp of approval. I know how you feel about loosing good friends. I lost two. It's tough to watch someone slowly die. God bless her soul.
Question: Plantar melanoma--has anyone personally dealt w/this type of cancer? My best friend was diagnosed 7 yrs ago w/this. He had a toe amputated & several lymph nodes removed in the groin & abdominal cavity then went thru 1 yr of interferon treatment w/success. Now 6 yrs & 11mos later he had a recurrence in his chest & now is spread to the spine. Was told initially if there's a recurrence he would be terminal.
Started chemo & radiation on Xmas eve. Despite the outcome we know time duration is less than 6 mos if chemo & radiation take, but not more. Therefore what is the progression we can expect w/his quality of life. I know it varies from patient to patient. He has a super attitude, but he's a overweight (not morbidly) w/hi BP and wonder if these are important factors to considered.
Looking to know what to expect w/this type of cancer & what resources (websites) can be helpful when preparing for the stages. I wish I could find a specialist who could cure this cancer, but everywhere I researched so far says this cancer is fatal.
Thank you for any help and support you provide.
We would like to state that although prayer is important we are looking for the scientific aspects in this answer.
Thank you Rachel for the weblinks. So sorry for your loss of your cousin. I'm just reeling in misery that this cancer is resistent to most treatments. Interleuken-2 was mentioned, but he isn't a candidate having a history of high BP and being overweight.
Answer: I am very sorry to hear about your friend. My cousin died of a melanoma this summer aged 29. It had recurred less than a year after she first had it treated. She was re-diagnosed in the February and had died by the end of July. Melanoma is VERY aggressive and attacks soft tissues, like lungs, guts etc. In the end, it spread to her brain (which is the case in more than 50% of people with melanomas that spread, it is the type of cancer most likely to spread to the brain), and the pressure eventually caused strokes, fits and killed her.
I am wondering for your friend's sake whether the chemo/radiotherapy is worth having. Melanoma is EXTREMELY resistant to both and chemotherapy really impacts quality of life, without showing any improvements to short-term survival and only 10-15% of cases show any response at all. My cousin spent a lot of her time in the last few months travelling to Israel to have expensive gene therapy (in addition to chemo) that did nothing and I can't help but feel it exhausted her in her last few months needlessly.
I'm afraid no matter what you do, this will be heart-breaking. Get him to do as much as he can now because in the last couple of months, if my cousin is anything to go by, he will be pretty bed bound and possibly in quite a lot of pain, particularly if the tumour is in the spine. My sympathies are with you all.
Question: i think my mum has melanoma but she wont go to the doctors to get it checked out :S? my mum has a wart on her hand that has changed from when she first developed it about 10 years ago. It is about 6-7mm in diameter and grows bigger until it bleeds, scabs over and falls off. it then grows back but when it comes back it is always bigger than what it was before. im getting really worried because i wrote down all her symptoms and then went on cancer research uk website and looked up her symptoms and it said that she may have melanoma :S im scared that it is melanoma but she refuses to go the doctors because she says its nothing at all to worry about but i want her to get it checked out cos she is worrying me with it. does anyone know whether it will be melanoma or not?? please reply ASAP :) x
Answer: Malignant melanoma needs to be caught early before it mestatasises. which means affects the blood stream or lymph nodes. It may be a rodent ulcer that could be easily removed by a doctor but what u have explained may also be "malignant. If it is the latter then it needs to be treated immediately. I hope ur mum never became a sun worshipper as this can increase the problem dramatically. Tell ur mum if it is malignant then she will have a very short life. I am so sorry to be so blatant but my best friend is in hospital at present and is stage 3 with fluid on the brain, deaf in one ear and inconclusive blood test results. She has gradinegos syndrome which is linked with melanoma, she has diplopia of the eye and is very poorly. She is 44 now when she was 20 she had a mole that changed and it was removed and 14 years later developed "metastatic malignant melanoma". I am so sorry to shock but this is really important to get this checked out. love julia (via david seeney) I wish u all the best. xxxxxxxx
Question: Skin cancer -- strange looking mole on back? It is tiny, but it looks and feels quite odd. It has two colors (dark brown and light brown) and I did have A LOT of sun exposure as a child without using SPF protection.
I've been doing a lot of research and reading online about skin cancer and melanoma specifically, and so far from pictures I've seen, it looks more like melanoma than basal cell or squamous cell. But I've also read that for it to be melanoma, it should be at least the size of a pencil eraser, which mine isn't (mine's much smaller). Should I be concerned and will the doctor take me seriously if I ask him to check it out, or because of it's size do you think this is an ordinary mole?
Answer: Well what you need to do is go to a dermatologist to look at it. If the doctor thinks it could be cancer, the doctor will remove it.
Question: Whats a good topic for a Science Research Report for a High School sophomore? I have had the same science teacher all year, first biology now earth space science and we have to do 4 reports per 18 weeks, i have previously covered, baseball and steroids, china melanoma problem, volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, OCD, and skin cancer, i want to know a good topic that involves science that would not be too out of reach for a 16 year old sophomore in high school.
also the report has to be a length of 4 pages so the topic needs to have a lot of info
Answer: You could do a report on one of the planets, a comet, the asteroid belt, or the Hubble Space Telescope. That has to do with space science. Hop that helped.
Question: Is melanoma hereditary? is it hereditary, and if so, where is the gene located? (if known)
I am writing this research paper on cancer, and I chose to do it on melanoma. please and thank you!!!!
Answer: About 10% of melanomas occur in family clusters. You may want to research Atypical Mole Syndrome or Dysplastic Nevus Syndrome. Oncogene mutations and amplifications N-ras, Ha-ras, Ki-ras and p53 actioncogene have been described.
Question: Did you know that Meat raises lung cancer? People who eat a lot of red meat and processed meats have a higher risk of several types of cancer, including lung cancer and colorectal cancer, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.
The work is the first big study to show a link between meat and lung cancer. It also shows that people who eat a lot of meat have a higher risk of liver and esophageal cancer and that men raise their risk of pancreatic cancer by eating red meat.
"A decrease in the consumption of red and processed meat could reduce the incidence of cancer at multiple sites," Dr. Amanda Cross and colleagues at the U.S. National Cancer Institute wrote in their report, published in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Medicine.
The researchers studied 500,000 people aged 50 to 71 who took part in a diet and health study done in conjunction with the AARP, formerly the American Association for Retired Persons.
After eight years, 53,396 cases of cancer were diagnosed.
"Statistically significant elevated risks (ranging from 20 percent to 60 percent) were evident for esophageal, colorectal, liver, and lung cancer, comparing individuals in the highest with those in the lowest quintile of red meat intake," the researchers wrote.
The people in the top 20 percent of eating processed meat had a 20 percent higher risk of colorectal cancer -- mostly rectal cancer -- and a 16 percent higher risk for lung cancer.
"Furthermore, red meat intake was associated with an elevated risk for cancers of the esophagus and liver," the researchers wrote.
These differences held even when smoking was accounted for.
"Red meat intake was not associated with gastric or bladder cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, or melanoma," added the researchers, whose study is freely available on the Internet at http://medicine.plosjournals.org/perlserv/?request=get-document& doi=10.1371/journal.pmed.0040325.
Red meat was defined as all types of beef, pork and lamb. Processed meat included bacon, red meat sausage, poultry sausage, luncheon meats, cold cuts, ham and most types of hot dogs including turkey dogs.
Meats can cause cancer by several routes, the researchers noted. "For example, they are both sources of saturated fat and iron, which have independently been associated with carcinogenesis," the researchers wrote.
Meat is also a source of several chemicals known to cause DNA mutations, including N-nitroso compounds (NOCs), heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
Jeanine Genkinger of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and Anita Koushik of the University of Montreal said the findings fit in with other research.
"Meat consumption in relation to cancer risk has been reported in over a hundred epidemiological studies from many countries with diverse diets," they wrote in a commentary.
Answer: Yes, I read about this today. I personally do not eat any red meat or processed meats of any kind, but was unaware of the link to lung and colorectal cancer until now.
Thanks for the info. and take care!
Question: What's the best way to get a tan? I really wanted to try tanning beds, but I did research and don't want melanoma [the deadliest type of skin cancer] in the future.
I don't tan easily, but I don't want to be pail this summer!
How do spray tans work? Do they wash off? How long do they last?
Answer: I heard the sun might help you with that.
Question: please help me I'll give 10 points? please just check and make any correction if i did any mistakes I'll give 10 points for the best correction
Yet people continue to believe that sun exposure is bad for health. Warnings about the dangers of the sun are starker than ever, and skin cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer. Experts at Cancer Research UK fear that rates of melanoma, the most serious form, are likely to treble in the next 30 years. Furthermore Most dermatologists believe that no amount of sun exposure is safe because sunlight damages DNA of skin cells and kills them causing premature aging of the skin.

I've already asked this very same question, however I'm hoping by posting it at another day and time I could find more responses in addition to one received.
Thanks for help.
Extra info...doctors stated that he MIGHT have six months w/chemo & radiation, but unlikely longer.
Answer: I am a retired Hospice Nurse and all I can tell you is NOONE really knows for sure how or how long things will go. Six months could be a month to a year or longer. God is the only one who can answer your question. (and he ain't talkin) I asked the same sort of questions when my mom was dying and I understand why you ask.
Question: 250,000 cases a year of skin cancer!? Why do skin cancers spread at different rates? Meaning the speed of killing cells on the skin. For example, Carcinoma and Melanoma.
If thees cases were reported why in the hell does the Government allow young people to bask in the sun with sun tanning oil made with this so called SPF rating. And also. If research really came up with a cure for cancer would they tell us?
Answer: Actually it is 1 million cases diagnosed each year and that is only BCC and SCC. All cancers regardless of what area of the body they arise in spread at different rates this isn’t limited to skin cancer. There are variables as to why, but basically it is just the nature of the disease. The government “allows” us to do many things that are not healthy for us because it is not their place to allow us to do or not do anything, as we are supposed to be living in a democracy where we are free to make decisions for ourselves. And yes of course if a cure was found we would be told. That kind of news would be hard to contain even if the party that discovered it would want to and there is no reason they would.
