Prostate Cancer Research
Question: How Do You Feel About Little Money Being Spent on Prostate Cancer Research? Breast cancer research receives 50 times the amount of money that prostate cancer research receives.
40,000 women die per year because of breast cancer. Yet, 27,000 men die from prostate cancer.
Supposedly, dads, sons, and husbands are important to women.
How do you feel about the way-out-of-proportion amount of money that breast cancer resereach receives even though your dads and sons are just as much at risk of dying from prostate cancer?
Do you give money to breast cancer research while giving little to prostate cancer?
Answer: Early testing is the key to prostate cancer.
It's that simple.
Prostate cancer is highly treatable in its early stages.
This goes for testicular cancer as well.
This isn't so with breast cancer.
However, heart disease is still the #1 killer!
tc
Question: Do liberal wives donate to prostate cancer research or just breast cancer? Do they have dads, sons, ...? ... and husbands?
(Prostate cancer kills 1/2 as many men as the number of women that breast cancer kills)
Answer: Liberals do not donate, and their wives really don't, it is difficult to understand since they want everything for nothing but they just simply refuse to give!!
Question: How much money is invested in research of prostate cancer?
Answer: a lot...
Question: Why is the federal government (US) spending 7x more on breast cancer research than prostate cancer, despite... ...the fact that about 9 percent more men in the US develop prostate cancer than women develop breast cancer.
$550 million v. $80 million
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=48895
Likewise, in Australia, breast cancer on average kills 2600 women each year
However,
http://www.prostate.org.au/pcfa-reso...nformation.php
Prostate cancer kills 2,700 Australian men every year.
2600 women v. 2700 men. Yet the Australian Government, in 2004, through the National Health and Medical Research Council, provided $6.9 million in funding for research into breast Cancer. While the Australian Government, through the National Health and Medical Research Council, provided $2.5 million in funding for research into prostate cancer.
$6.9 m for women; $2.5 m for men.
Women receiving 3x more funding than men.
My question is WHY
Are men just not worth as much as women in our society?
Answer: There is no reason nor excuse to have seven times more government spending on breast cancer than prostrate cancer. I know that the breast cancer charities have done an excellent job creating awareness and gathering funds. I applaud the work they have done.
I have yet seen a valid reason to support the biased spending.
Question: research, finding data on prostate cancer? please help i need to get data on incidence or mortality rates for prostate cancer over the past 20 years. i am unable to get data anything from the past 20 years that is clear it has to be u.k only
i have tried cancer research webs but not very useful.
thanx but as i said can't get it from the past 20 years
Answer: try www.nhs.co.uk/info
Question: Breast Cancer Research Gets 10X as Much Money as Prostate Cancer. Will Hillary End Prostate Cancer Research & ... give the money to women's causes?
Does Hillary view the 10-to-1 ratio as too low?
What do you think the right ratio should be 1-to-1? 10-to-1? 10000-to-1?
I've lost relatives to both. Sorry. But, I realize that a dad deserves as much love and care as a mom.
jury,
the kill ratio is 2-to-1. Why does prostate get so little money? Don't women care about their dads and sons? Don't Hillary and Pelosi care about men? Do they only care about women but not sons?
Answer: Assuming what you say is true (which I doubt), it could be because breast cancer KILLS more of the people who get it than prostate cancer does. Prostate cancer is an extremely slow-growing cancer, with a relatively low death rate, thus making it less of a national priority. The American Cancer Society estimates that 27,050 men will die from the disease this year in the U.S., while breast cancer will kill 40,460 women.
Question: The chance of a man getting prostate cancer? in his lifetime is 17 percent -- roughly 4.5 percent greater than a woman's risk of getting breast cancer.
One could argue that there is inequality in the way american society treats the sexes when it comes to cancer: Do we celebrate prostate cancer awareness month? Stage walks for prostate cancer research? Wear purple ribbons?
Why not??
Answer: Prostate cancer and breast cancer are both unbelievably commercialized and politicized - to the point of having much more awareness, funding and organization than other, more serious and more prevalent cancers (the most prevalent example being lung cancer, which strikes and kills nearly twice as often as the gender-specific cancers in both sexes).
It can certainly be argued, and argued well, that the commercialization of breast cancer has been more successful than the commercialization of prostate cancer (let's buy those pink ribbons, folks!). But I don't think the ideal solution is to have a male-only version of the disease just as trendy as the female one; I think the ideal solution would be if cancer research (and in particular funding for that research) would break down the unnecessary borders between politicized body parts, and look to treatments of the disease in general.
The politicization of certain cancers has always bothered me - and only more so when you have personal experience with the people who are victimized by it (i.e. people diagnosed with less popular but similar forms of cancer who are given abysmal survival rates and substandard treatment because of the relative public disinterest in their forms of cancer).
Question: Why is SOOO Much More Money Spent on Breast Cancer Rearch than on Prostate Cancer Reserach? Roughly 27,000 men in the U.S. die from prostate cancer each year. Roughly 40,000 women die from breast cancer each year.
Why are women such complete selfish b**tards by complaining that life short-changes them when so much more money is spent to protect our moms and daughters than to help our dads and sons.
Women should be ashamed of themselves.
About 50 times as much money is spent on breast cancer research than on prostate research.
That is SICK!!! I guess women and girls could give a crap about their dads and sons.
This issue isn't my #1 priority in life.
But, I do believe that people should not be afraid to look in the mirror at themselves and see how they betray other humans.
Answer: You sound very bitter about this subject. Is someone near to you going through prostate cancer and having a hard time finding support? There are many successful treatments for prostate cancer. One such method is implanting tiny radioactive 'seeds' into the prostate. They are the size of a grain of rice and they work by bringing radiation right to the prostate. After a certain amount of time they are no longer giving off radiation so they are safe to stay implanted in the prostate. I'm sorry if you are going through a tough time right now. Here are a few links at the bottom.
(I agree, and you might see that you're acting rather rude if you 'looked in the mirror'. Blaming all women for this problem? The bulk of breast cancer funding comes for large companies, so I guess you should be cursing CEO, not women. Women had to band together to get attention for breast cancer, and this took some time. So I suppose once all men become as passionate as you about this issue and start taking a stand like women, then maybe they could raise awareness and money. So should I say men are lazy because they haven't taken a stand or raised awareness for prostate cancer? No. Just like you shouldn't blame all women. These two subjects are NOT related. It is not like there is only so much awareness you can have for the 2 types of cancer! This is ridiculous and you know it, you don't need me to point it out to see it! )
Question: Why is there so much fundraising for Breast Cancer ? But not for Prostate Cancer ? I see alot of charity and publicity about Breast Cancer. I even bought a book of stamps with proceeds going to Breast Cancer research.
But what about men ? Men are just as likely to get Prostate Cancer and much more likely to die from prostate cancer. Because men rarely get checkups for it.... until it's too late.
For Women, early detection is key to fighting Breast Cancer. Same goes for Men. But there has been so little publicity for Men to get examined. Why the difference of the sexes ?
Answer: Because breast cancer is a very fast growing type of cancer and prostate cancer is the slowest growing cancer known.

Question: I want to research a doctors experience in the field of prostate cancer.I would like his standing in thisfield I am looking ahead in the next six months or so to be given radiation treatments to destroy the cancer. The procedure is quite delicate and I would like to check my doctors track record for this procedure and not from him but from public records but I do not know how to go about this process. I would be anxious to hear from anyone that does know. Thanks.
Answer: Everyone gets auditted from someone these days so the information will be somewhere out there. Remember that this information has to be carefully interpreted eg some physicians select better cases to treat and may have better outcomes because of this. Ask your doc how many he's done and then just ahve faith. Numbers are just numbers at the end of the day and most people would actually be happier not knowing.
And radiotherapy instead of surgery suggests (atleast in the UK) non-curative treatment.
PS If you're friendly with a doctor I'd ask him for personal recommendations, he may even recommend someone if you're not on friendly terms. Remember doctors (should) get a broad level of experience and will have worked with at least a few local urologists/ radiologists. This route is much better than looking for statistics in my opinion
Question: Are any of the other teams donating money to cancer research for homers? I'm only wondering cuz the last week or so for every home run hit so much money was given to cancer research. I'm wondering if any of your teams are doing that too. If they are, what do you think about it? Personally, it hit close to home for us Texas fans because our announcer had prostate cancer and had surgery last week. So are any of your teams raising money? :)
thanks for the kind words jack
Answer: Ya, I kinda think that it was the whole league. Because I was watching the Brewers and Rockies game the other day and each home run was worth like $17,000. And it ended up that the two teams together hit like 7 home runs. So it came to like $119,000 in the end of the game. I think that is really cool that they are doing that.
Question: What is the cause of prostate cancer? I am doing some research on prostate cancer but everything i check it says there is no cause for it. i need to know how it affects the cell. Any ideas?
Answer: It is thought that potential causal factors act by altering the balance of male hormones in the body because prostate cancer is a hormone-sensitive cancer, like breast cancer. The male sex hormone, testosterone, produced by the testes influences the growth and spread of prostate cancer. Thus, higher testosterone levels or greater lifetime exposure to testosterone appears to contribute to its development. This has been used to explain the higher incidence rates in African Americans, who tend to have higher average testosterone levels than other ethnic groups or in tall men who may have had an earlier onset of higher testosterone levels.
Question: Which candidate successfully got increased funding for prostate cancer and childhood asthma? Clinton or Obama? Increased research funding for prostate cancer and childhood asthma at the National Institutes of Health?
I looked it up and it was Hillary. You are right.
Answer: Clinton
Question: Does Hillary Laugh While Your Dad/Son Dies of Prostate Cancer? Breast cancer research gets 10 times as much money as prostate cancer research.
Yet, 1/2 as many men will die from PC as women will die of BC.
Have you heard any female congresswomen fight for the men in their lives? Why NOT?????
Is that a sick sign of our culture?
captain... men die from PC and women in Congress ignore it. Why? Sexist? Hate of men or what?
Answer: cancer research is NOT mutually exclusive - a cure in breast cancer will lead to great strides in finding a cure for PC
Please don't politicize cancer in this way
Question: If only slightly more (relatively speaking) women die of breast cancer than men die of prostate cancer...? ... then why is it that government spends almost twice as much funding breast cancer research than prostate cancer research?
And don't tell me that it's because women have two breasts, because it only takes one to kill you. (I wouldn't have to make this demand if it weren't for the fact that I anticipate this very comment.)
Also... do they have a prostate cancer awareness month?
Edit: Actually, they do have a prostate cancer month... just looked it up. Nevermind on that one.
Oh, and I'm not trying to make myself sound like I'm against funding for breast cancer research, I just want to know why prostate cancer research is given the back burner approach.
Although you won't ever catch me wearing pink or eating a pink donut... there are just some lengths I will not go to to support a cause.
Wow! Excellent answer, Panda!
Answer: The truth is that women who advocate for breast cancer are far more organized than men have been for prostate cancer research. It is not just prostate cancer or mens cancer that has been harmed by the media hype surrounding breast cancer . . children and young adults have also had cancer research funding cut. There really is no way to make the political machine fair for all types of cancers. Research dollars are limited and the people with the loudest voice and the best organization will get the prize. It is not fair, but life is not fair. All I can say to you is that at least there is some research being done for prostate cancer . . I have a son with a rare abdominal sarcoma and there is no research being done for his disease at all. I really do not expect there to be any either and the best we can do is support a general research on all sarcoma . . of which there is little funding. The sarcoma community has been organizing and hopefully will find a louder voice:
2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative
http://liddyshriversarcomainitiative.org/Initiatives/TS%202007/ts_2007.htm
If you feel strongly about Prostate cancer research you should join a group to have your voice heard too.
Best to you.
Question: Moms, Do You Contribute Only to Breast Cancer Research? What About Your Sons, Dads, and Husbands? Do you contribute money to prostate cancer research?
Do you care about your sons and dads as much as you care about your daughters and moms? Do you show it in your donations to cancer research?
What would Pelosi do?
Kris,
Great point. Sadly, breast cancer research gets 10X as much money as prostate cancer research. It's sad that donors are gender biased. (Oh, 1/2 as many men die from prostate cancer as women who die from breast cancer. Prostate is very serious. And, it can take your dad or your son)
Answer: Sons and Dads have breast Cancer too! Check it out.
Question: How much should prostate cancer research be getting as compared to breast cancer research? Recent studies show that the death rates from Prostate Cancer are much higher than previsously thought, higher than even Breast Cancer rates. Even previosuly, there was only a 1% difference in the death rates. Do you know how government research money is provided for Breast Cancer as compared to what is provided for Prostate Cancer?
Recent studies have also found that the PSA for prostate cancer is not as reliable as once thought, so vigilance in taking the test may not help.
The difference is that the government provides $1 for Prostate Cancer research for every $700 for Breast Cancer. This last year, the very first Federal Men Health Commission was established, but it has to find its own funding. There are over 200, fully funded Federal Women's Health Commission.
http://www.menshealthnetwork.org/
Answer: I'm not sure how the funds are divided, but the rates of death could be directly related to the fact, that women are now going to the doctors specifically for breast exams and mammograms catching cancer earlier. Maybe the men are not as vigilant. Also, you might take into consideration that women are involved in A LOT of private breast cancer research fundraisers and charities, so therefore, breast cancer research may be making greater strides with the private donations.
Question: Massive inequality in Cancer research? While 35,000 American men a year die of prostate cancer and 43,000 women die of breast cancer (at a somewhat earlier age), breast-cancer research gets six times as much federal money as prostate-cancer research. I would understand that if 210, 000 women died every year of breast cancer, but research shows that's not the case.
What do you think of this heavy bias against men?
Answer: what do you know about these cancers other than the numbers?
i worked at a cancer hospital.
i can tell you that most men DIE WITH prostrate cancer, not of it. Google it if you dont believe me.
It tends to be a slow growing cancer - so slow, chemo is not often used with it (b/c chemo attacks fast-dividing cells). It is often found on autopsy when a man has died of something else.
It is one of the few (if only) cancers that has a treatment option of "watchful waiting" (NCI) b/c it's slow.
Breast cancer is not slow, cannot be watched and a woman wont die with it and not of it. And, by the way, men get breast cancer too.
It's really great that people take such an interest in inequality in research, but it really is a disservice when ppl dont know the first thing about a topic.
If you really feel passionate about inequities in healthcare, you would put your energies into the black-white disparties. Blacks (in the usa) suffer FAR WORSE than any men can complain about.
good luck to you.
