Skin Cancer Statistics
Question: Looking for statistics on skin cancer figures? I've never bothered to use sun cream, apart from the rare occasion when I've been abroad, and I am a bit sceptical about the dangers of exposure to the sun. Surely if it was so dangerous then skin cancer figures would be historically very high, and I am assuming skin cancer or disease of the skin would have been fairly easy to diagnose even when medicine was not so advanced.
Does anyone know where I can find skin cancer figures (and other diseases) going through history?
Answer: Incidence (annual) of Skin Cancer: more than 1 million annually (mostly the less dangerous types: basal and squamous)
http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/s/skin_can…
Incidence Rate: approx 1 in 272 or 0.37% or 1 million people in USA

Answer: It all comes down knowing which search terms to use
Try various combinations using
Morbity
Mortality
Here is rate of morbidity (how many people are likely to be diagnosed with it)
http://info.cancerresearchuk.org/healthy…
here are your death rates - click on the first link in red
http://info.cancerresearchuk.org/cancers…
Those are from cancer research UK - - looks like there is plenty of info on that site that will help - - doesnt look like they have it broken into gender. Add that as a search those those above to see what you get.
Question: Skin Cancer??? Where can I research statistics for skin cancer for where I live?
Websites Please.
Kansas, maybe like a map with colored areas of the more affected areas. Or just a site where u stick in ur location and it tells u.
Well, I need it for school. And we're supposed to use the internet.
Answer: Statistics for a city may come from the Cancer Society website; in a rural area, it may be you have to contact the local/regional health unit. Also, the Cancer Unit of a local hospital, if it has one, may be willing to help you out. You may have to do some legwork, rather than solely rely on the Internet.
Question: Statistics of skin cancer?!?!?!!!!? I need to know how many, in a general statement, have skin cancer today than, say, 50 years ago. A chart listing the amounts, or, better yet, any graphs charting the stats over the decades would help IMMENSLEY. Thanks...
Answer: Google works wonders when used properly.
Question: What kind of data can I gather about sunscreen and skin cancer? I am doing a project about nanoparticles used in sunscreen. Some people believe it can cause skin cancer, while others believe it protects from skin cancer. Are there any statistics I can use? Maybe some about which kinds of sunscreen have been most effective. Something including nanotechnology would be nice, but even just sunscreen statistics will do.
Please provide a link or two.
Thank you.
Answer: I have heard this concern too. As a consequence (two of my cousins have had malignant melanoma in their twenties, one died, one did not), I only use mineral sun blocks now. A quick google found this:
http://thegreenguide.com/reports/product…
Which is more of an overview. Here is some more specific stuff:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/84053…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padimate_O#…
Should get you started...
Question: hey, whats a good website for getting statistics and data for skin cancer? I need loads of data and stats for a school report im doing....
anyone??? :D
Answer: This site is a good start: http://www.skincancer.org/Skin-Cancer-Facts/
You can do a search with the words cancer, skin cancer, melanoma, skin cancer statistics etc. and find many more sites like this.
Question: if you tan regularly, but you have good skin, what are the chances of getting skin cancer? with all the recent statistics that show how many people have been developing skin cancer, i'm so scared that i'll get it too. I love being dark but how do i know my tanning limit and what are some signs of danger, aside from the enlarging beauty marks?
Answer: Tanning causes cancer years down the line. The damage you could be causing now, may cause the cancer 20 years from now.
Question: PLEASE ANSWER!!!! How many people died of skin cancer in 2007? please help, only statistics for 2007 or 2008 please
also, are more people aware of skin cancers now than 2-3 years ago?
please include any website you get info from
Answer: For 2007 looks like ~2500 deaths from squamous cell skin cancers and ~8100 deaths from melanoma in the USA, so that would be ~ 10,600 overall deaths from skin cancers in 2007 as you requested.
From http://www.aad.org/media/background/fact…
One American dies of melanoma almost every hour (every 62 minutes).
In 2008, 8,420 deaths will be attributed to melanoma — 5,400 men and 3,020 women.
The World Health Organization estimates that as many as 65,161 people a year worldwide die from too much sun, mostly from malignant skin cancer.
More than 75 percent of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma.
And from http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/conten…
Skin Cancer Facts
Most of the more than 1 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer diagnosed yearly in the United States are considered to be sun-related. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, will account for about 59,940 cases of skin cancer in 2007 and most (about 8,110) of the 10,850 deaths due to skin cancer each year.
Lastly from http://www.skincancer.org/content/view/3…
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer; about one million of the cases diagnosed annually are BCCs. BCCs are rarely fatal.
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer. More than 250,000 cases are diagnosed each year, resulting in approximately 2,500 deaths.
Added note - Why would someone give the thumbs down to an answer directly from internet data? This is not my opinion. I just did the search for this interesting question and picked out the info requested. Strange how people disapprove so easily. I've never given anyone a thumbs down even if I don't agree. We are just trying to help here.
My opinion is that there is a growing awareness of skin cancer and sun or UV light exposure compared to 2-3 years ago.
Question: Skin Cancer in Australia? Is it serious? the statistics show that 380,000 people are treated with skin cancer per year, thats more than 1000 per day!
I just migrated here and feel scared a bit, how Australians living with this hazard issue?
Answer: Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.
Remember, almost all skin cancer can be removed with a simple excision, if it is treated early. BCC and SCC are very rarely fatal. Watch out for Melanoma, though. It is very aggressive and need immediate attention. Wikipedia has an excellent article to get you up to speed on what to look for.
Wear protective clothing, a hat all the time, and sit in the shade. Stay out of the heat of the sun.
Question: What are some good attention getters for my speech? I am giving a process speech on "skin care"- how to a take care of your face. I can not think of any great attention getters besides the typical skin cancer/aging statistics. Does anyone have any ideas?
Answer: Visuals are always highly helpful. Find a dramatic picture of someone with skin cancer, perhaps. Or if you don't want to go that route, ask a few questions to engage attention. "How many of you wash your face daily?" "How many of you sunbathe?" "Who here knows someone with skin cancer?" Etc, etc. People like to show off, and generally if they know an answer to something--even if they wash their face twice daily--they'll be happy to raise their hands. And you should have their attention from then on, so long as you keep your voice full of inflections and speak loudly and clearly. Also be sure to start speaking within thirty seconds of reaching the podium or front of the room. It's very difficult to gain interest after that point. Good luck!
Question: How do you naturally lighten hair? My hair is very dark, straight, and short. It is golden brown in the sunlight, and it has layers. How do I naturally lighten it? My skin is as pale as it comes, and I don't want to tan. I don't want skin cancer, with statistics suggesting children with skin cancer is growing like an infant...Is there anyway to lighten hair without sun?
Answer: use lemons or peroxide, then run a blow dryer over it. That worked for me. The blow dryer heat is what helped it, looking naturally
Question: sunbeds do they really cause cancer, statistics these days are saying different? Hi i use sunbeds pretty much weekly.
Most places say it'll harm you.
But recently ive heard that the newer sunbeds won't do much harm, infact they will stop cancer.
http://www.consol.uk.com/article_new.asp?menuid=101&id=102
It says on there, I also found an article which one of the worlds best doctors wrote on how sunbeds causing cancer is a myth, a way to make them look bad, started out like chinese wispers and got way out of control.
My mum also works at hospital, they use UV rays to help prevent cancer!
People i know have used sunbeds twice a week for 20 years and have low risk of cancer!
Im confussed... should i worry?
I use creams before using a sunbed to HELP protect my skin from burning, i have yet to burn once =)
Any comments/feedback would help, im not looking for comments how stupid i am because its upto me =)
Thanks x
Answer: uv rays don't cause cancer, they significantly increase the risk. the thin is the stuff on the net could've been written by anyone so don't trust it 2 much, and no ur not stupid 4 wantin a tan, i love lookin tanned but use spray-ons instead. trust they're a lot better then sunbeds (and no i don't look orange lol)
Question: Is an increased risk of skin cancer the result of holes in our ozone? (Please help!)? Ok, this is my statement/questiony thing I'm doing for my science fair project. I need enough info to successfully fill one of those huge cardboard displays. I NEED INFORMATION!! Please help me, could you find sites that I would get GOOD information? I've been trying to look for statistics, but am finding NONE. NEED YOUR HELP!! It's due May 26th and me and my partner only settled on our topic now (to be fair, it was only assigned two or so weeks ago and only as a suggestion project, but now it's mandatory!)
Please find sites, preferably with statistics from, maybe, 70 years or even more back, and today's statistics!! You guys could be lifesavers here!
Or, you know, gradesavers.
(If it's important, this is a gr.9 science project)
Thanks.
Also, would any of you be able to add some help to my question? I'm not sure if I phrased it right...
Answer: Try this site for information on skin cancers.
Australia has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world, this is the site for the national information and prevention campaign.
The other site is an educational site from one of our local universities.
Question: Anyone taken psy statistics? Need heelp for research project!? Hey can anyone help me? I need a subject to research and make a project out of for my statistics class. It has to ba a subject that I can find the statistics on. Like for example, I was trying to do "Is Arizona's melanoma rate significantly higher than average?" The only problem was that I can not find any statistics that single out any type of skin cancer. I was also thinking about "Is the shoplifting rate significantly higher this year than average?" But I cannot find anything on this either. Please help, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. ; )
Answer: You won't find anything too current because the researchers who gather most of the statistics are still working on them. Expect at least a six month lag. Since it's for a psychology class, perhaps you should stick to a psychology problem, like do mental disorders follow certain families? You can get statistics and articles in refereed psychology journals. You could look up the incidence of learning disorders or behavioral disorders, and determine if it's a growing problem or holding steady. Ask your professor for a list of refereed journals(they're the most reliable because the articles are reviewed by experts before they will be published).
