Stomach Cancer Stages

Question: stomach cancer? My father was diagnose in late Jan with Stage 3 stomach cancer, after biopsy and ct scans it was determined that the tumor was contained to just the stomach, at that time he was treated with chemo, the plan was to shrink and then have surgery, he was scheduled for surgery this week but after second biopsy reports, the surgeons canceled surgery as because the tumor had actually grown a bit but still is contained to just the stomach, they want to try another chemo to try and shrink it but gave us the family an option to attempt surgery or try another chemo, the surgeon advises against surgery as he says we have not found an effective chemo to treat after surgery, the oncologist wanted surgery but is now hesitant because of the surgeon advising against it, ultimately the descion rest with the family, has anyone else been faced with this difficult decision before? It makes sense to find a chemo that work so he can be treated after surgery but also fear it wont work and it spreads. Help!!

Answer: This is always the worry . . however, consider this . . if the cancer has already spread or metastasized your father is going to need an effective chemotherapy to stop it. The entire time he is in surgery and then recovering from the surgery those microscopic cancer cells could be growing somewhere else. But, by than the doctors would not know what chemo to give him in order to get rid of that distant growth. This is a tough decision for you and it will not harm anyone to get a second opinion. However, at some point you need to go by your doctor or surgeons expert advice. They are oncologists and have treated this type of disease before . . so they know what can happen. At some point you are going to need to trust their advice. And, time, in the case of cancer can be critical. Good luck in whatever you decide.
