Answer: What Is Stomach Cancer? Cancer of the stomach, or gastric cancer, is a disease in which stomach cells become malignant (cancerous) and grow out of control, forming a tumor. Almost all (95%) of stomach cancers start in the glandular tissue that lines the stomach. The tumor may spread along the stomach wall or may grow directly through the wall and shed cells into the bloodstream or lymphatic system. Once beyond the stomach, cancer can spread to other organs. Stomach cancers are classified according to the type of tissue where they originate. The most common, adenocarcinomas, start in the glandular stomach lining. Other forms include lymphomas, which involve the lymphatic system, and sarcomas, which involve the connective tissue (muscle, fat, or blood vessels). Carcinogens cause errors in the genetic code that controls growth and repair of cells. Various medical conditions are associated with an increased risk of developing stomach cancer. These include gastritis, pernicious anemia, gastric polyps, and gastric (peptic) ulcer. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a bacterium that infects the lining of the stomach and causes chronic inflammation and ulcers, may also increase the risk of stomach cancer. There is a slightly increased risk of stomach cancer in people who use tobacco or drink alcoholic beverages regularly. People who work in certain industries are also at greater risk, including those in the coal mining, nickel refining, and rubber and timber processing industries, and those exposed to asbestos fibers. Stomach cancer is most often seen in men over 55, and is more common in Japan, Korea, parts of Eastern Europe, and Latin America than in the United States and Canada. This is thought to be related to the common diet in these countries that consists of nitrate-containing, salted foods, especially meat and fish. Question: Is it possible to have your entire stomach removed due to cancer, and still survive? Intravenous nutrition? My husbands grandmother lives abroad and shes suffering from stomach cancer. I cant ascertain whether it has spread anywhere else, but if its just the stomach, the whole stomach, could it be entirely removed and her survive?

Answer: Yes, the entire stomach can be removed. Her surgeon would than attach the esophagus to the small intestine. Not sure what the quality of life would be after such a procedure, so you may want to do more research. I have heard that after a total gastrectomy that a patient can eventually begin eating 'normally' again, but will eat smaller portions. Our sons surgical oncologist told us that almost every thing in the body can be removed, replaced, or revamped other than organs critical to sustain life.

Question: How do you take care of a stomach cancer patient? I need to do a project about stomach cancer and I need to know how you diagnose it or something like that....I guess

Answer: Stomach cancer is diagnosed using an EGD (esophagastroduodenoscopy). This test basically consist of going to the hospital and being put into a twilight sleep while the gastroenterologist runs a scope thru your mouth into your stomach. The scope, usually called an olymposcope has special tools on the end of it so the doctor can pinch biopsy tissue out of the stomach if he sees anything looking suspicous. They examine the stomach and see if there are any ulcers or suspicious looking lesions which need to be biopsied. It takes about less than 10 minutes to run the scope into the stomach and then they remove it and you wake back up. The biopsy samples are sent to pathology where they are examined under a microscope to determine if they are malignant or benign and give the gastroenterologist a diagnosis. The gastroenterologist examines so many people every day thru EGD examination, they can sometimes tell if something is suspicious for malignancy just by looking at it.

Answer: well, i had a friend who had stomach cancer for the second time. he had his stomach removed. Careful of harsh things he eats....never too spicy...and never too much..just eats a lot of times per day....careful of stomach bleeding....but i have a cure for it now..... Please stop the chemo therapy. Doctors dont want you to know of the alternative medicines that can actually cure cancer. If a doctor tells you the alternative medicines, they will be out of a job. How much does it cost for chemo therapy each time you take in those chemicals? This medicine is better and only $75 dollars a bottle. Each bottle lasts a month. You take an ounce per day, and after each dose, you eat a banana or eat potatoes. its called "CESIUM CHLORIDE." The problem with chemo therapy is that they always say that they never know how each person will be affected by the chemicals. You could die the next day, or you can die in a month. Spread within the area of the duodenum may also affect the drainage of the pancreas and the liver, either of which could cause considerable discomfort. Doctors may do surgery or place tubes to bypass the affected parts. I would anticipate that your friend will lose a lot of weight become weak. He will probably be given sufficient painkillers to control his pain, but will probably be otherwise uncomfortable. He may have good days interspersed with bad ones. If he has surgery or chemotherapy, he may improve temporarily. In the end, he will probably be very weak and have liver failure. Which organ failure causes his end will not matter. Question: what can I do to help someone with stomach cancer? My father has stomach cancer, and I wish I could do something to help. Am I at any risk? He lives in Minnesota, I live in Illinois. What can I do for him?

Answer: This is what I did when my dad had cancer. I prayed that he wouldn't suffer too much. I told him I loved him often, when I visited him I showed him a happy front, I asked him how his day had been and really listened without interrupting when he spoke, I asked him if there was anything I could do or bring for him (food, clothes, etc.) and I played cards with him. When he had to be hospitalized, everyday, I went to see him after work and sometimes fed him. I thanked him for everything he'd done for me and told him he'd always have a special place in my heart. One day, I asked him if he'd like to get out of his room and go for a floor tour in the provided wheelchair (as he didn't have any strength for walking). You should have seen the smile on his face when he said "yes". I took him down various hallways and he acted like I had given him the moon. He was so happy for getting out of bed and out of his room that it almost broke my heart. I wished at the time that I had thought of it before. In his good moments, we talked about happy memories and we laughed together. Somedays, he'd be asleep when I got there. I just held his hand and waited for him to wake up. Also, I always kissed him when I arrived, when I left and told him I'd be back the next day. When he died, I was sad but happy that he wasn't suffering anymore. I have a book marker with a picture of him and most every night when I have my 1/2 hour of reading before going to sleep, I kiss him his picture and at times talk to him.
